Glenwood girls second, boys 10th at Hawkeye-10 meet

Glenwood’s Grace Berglund ran an 18:45 to place second in the girls race to Council Bluffs St. Albert’s Lili Denton.
Grace Berglund led the Glenwood girls to a second place finish at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Cross Country Meet Thursday at the Shenandoah High School.
Harlan won the girls team title, edging the Rams 53 to 65 in the team scores. This marks the eighth straight season Glenwood has finished first or second in every conference meet since 2017.
“Overall, we were proud of how the girls ran,” said Glenwood girls coach Marissa Klindt. “We told them all before their races to go out and run a race they were proud of, and by the end of the night the majority of our girls could say they did just that.”
Berglund was the runner-up in the girls race to Council Bluffs St. Albert’s Lili Denton. Denton ran an 18:5 to top the field. Berglund was second with an 18:45.
Caitlin Hebel finished seventh at Shenandoah in 20:20 to give the Rams two top 10 finishers.
“Grace Berglund and Caitlin Hebel ran incredible races for us,” said Klindt. “Caitlin actually ran her best 5K time ever. We had nine other middle school and high school athletes run their all-time bests.”
Megan Hughes added a 16th place finish, Haylee Hughes was 25th and Katelyn Harms 26th to complete the Rams’ scoring.
On the boys side, Red Oak snuck by Council Bluffs Lewis Central 71 to 73 to win its first conference cross country meet since 1982.
The Titans’ Kevin Coots and Evan Lillie were first and second in the boys race. Coots ran a 16:03 and Lillie a 16:23.
The Glenwood boys squad tallied a score of 192 for 10th place.
Glenwood boys coach Todd Peverill said it was good to see Bryce Keller place 18th in his senior and final Hawkeye 10 meet. His 17:58 was his best time of the season
Glenwood’s Lucas Harms added a 35th place finish, Jax Long was 38th, Grant Sorensen was 48th and Cole Bergland 53rd to round out the scoring.
Peverill said Berglund was running a good, competitive race until just past the two mile mark when he suffered an intense cramp.
Freshmen Long and Leilynd Smith, along with sophomores Sorenesen and Harms ran their season best races.
“This is a young team which will need to continue to learn to race competitively and become more aware of their placement in the races which includes needing to get off to a better start in each race,” Peverill said.
