Fremont-Mills girls wins district, send 10 to state track meet

The Fremont-Mills girls track team celebrates its state qualifying meet champinship Thursday in Woodbine.
The Fremont-Mills girls qualified in 10 events and ran away with the team title at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Woodbine Thursday.
The Knights won eight events to notch automatic bids to this week’s Iowa State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines. The Class 1A events begin Thursday at 2:40 p.m. and run through Saturday night on the Blue Oval.
The Knights tallied 131 points to West Monona’s 82.
Fremont-Mills coach Kyle Fichter called the Woodbine state qualifier a “great meet by everyone.”
“We were able to get five relays and six individuals to the state meet,” Fichter said. “All the kids performed very well in very windy conditions. The times were good enough to win but the kids have shown all year that we have some better times in us. Once we get to the state meet and against the competition the times will really come out.
“Winning the district meet was not the first priority, but things fell in place for us throughout the night as the kids performed well in all of the events.”
The Knights’ Lana Alley (100-meter hurdles), Bella Gute (400-meter hurdles), Jenevieve McLaughlin (discus) and the sprint medley, 4x100, 4x200, shuttle hurdle and distance medley relays all topped the field in
Woodbine to earned automatic bids to state.
In class 1A, event winners at each of the 10 qualifying meets earn automatic berths with the next 14 best performances around the state earning at-large bids.
Carlie Nuckolls (400-meter hurdles) and Hannah Wilson (800) punched tickets to state as at-large qualifiers.
