Knights sweep at Corner Conference track meets

The Fremont-Mills girls and boys swept the team titles at the Corner Conference Track and Field Meet last Tuesday in Bedford.

The title was the Knight girls fifth straight in a dominant performance that saw them outscore runner-up Griswold 215 to 113 in the scoring.

On the boys side, Fremont-Mills had a closer battle, edging the host Bulldogs 158 to 143 in the team scores.

Together, the Knights captured the Corner Conference Kemp-Jauron-Hicks Trophy awarded the program that scores the most points combined between the boys and girls at the conference meet.

“Everyone performed awesome last night filling the relays with different kids because of the shift to loading the individuals really worked out,” said Fremont-Mills girls coach Kyle Fichter. “Scoring that many points takes everyone and that is truly what happened last night with everyone stepping up and performing the way that they did.

“The relays that were put together that hadn't had much time to work together really stood out and the individuals that ran multiple events at a very high level were also amazing.

In all, the Fremont-Mills girls won nine gold medals in Bedford. The Knights Lana Alley was the recipient of four of those wins.

The senior won the 100-meters, the 100-meter hurdles, the 200-meters and the long jump. Her 12.76 time in the 100 is a personal best.

Carlie Nuckolls grabbed a pair of golds in the 400-meters, and the 400-meter hurdles and Hayleigh Mattox added a gold in the shot put and a second-place finish in the discus.

The Knights also won the sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays.

Nuckolls, Reese Gute, Abby Malcom and Brooklyn Weldon ran a 1:08.18 to win the shuttle hurdle and Greenlie Campbell, Ellie Barbour, Kinley Blackburn and Weldon were first in the sprint medley with a time of 2:03.95.

East Mills finished fourth at Bedford with a top finish coming from its 4x200-meter relay team of Jacey Vandenberg, Teagan Pontow, Loycee Palmer and Ellie Hagen. Sophie Housh added a second-place medal in the 800-meters.

On the boys side, Fremont-Mills captured its first conference title since 2019 with gold medal performances by J.W. Linkenhoker in the 110-meters hurdles, Anderson Carter in the 3,200-meters, Gavin Crom in the shot put and its distance medley relay team.

The distance medley team of L Morse, Sawyer Forney, Rhett Lemonds and Carter won gold in 4:18.83.

The Knights’ 4x400 and shuttle hurdle relays added second place medals along with Paxton Campbell in the long jump, 100-meters and 200-meters and Carter in the 1,600.

East Mills was led by a strong sprinting performance by Jiri Brodigan. The senior won gold in the 100 and 200-meters and anchored the 4x200-meter relay to gold along with Beau Burdic, Curtis Jackson and Jhalil Reed.

Khayden Poorker added a gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles.
