Four Rams crowned at Hawkeye 10 wrestling meet

Glenwood’s Mason Koehler won his third Hawkeye 10 Conference wrestling title with a pin in the 215-pound finals in Glenwood Saturday.
Glenwood crowned four and took home runner-up honors at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Tournament Saturday in Glenwood.
The Rams, seeking their first conference title since 2018, finished a closed second to Council Bluffs Lewis Central, 259.5 to 233. The Titans won the top trophy in 2011. Atlantic, last year’s conference champion, was third.
“We wrestled well,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “We got second in the conference and in duals as well and Lewis Central has a good squad and put together a good squad throughout the year, so you have to give them credit where credit is due. But I thought our kids competed well.”
Glenwood matched the Titans with four individual champions each.
The Rams’ had six wrestlers reach their finals with Ace Cochrane (106 pounds), Quinn Lane (113), Nile Lundvall (175) and Mason Koehler (215) all capturing top finishes.
Cochrane, a freshman currently ranked No. 8 in the state, pinned both of his opponents, including a first period fall of Atlantic’s Dayton Van Horn in the finals.
“Ace is hard worker and a great kid,” Weber said. “He’s wrestled the Van Horn kid a couple times and he got put on his back last time and he had a whole different mindset this time and dominated him in the first period. That shows his growth and willingness to work on what he needs to work on.”
Lane pinned Red Oak’s Izic Zarate in the first period of his final. For the day he was 3-0 with three pins.
“He pinned everybody that was in front of him,” Weber said. “He’s been really impressive this year. He’s always been in the shadow of some of our other freshmen but he’s proving to himself he’s just as good and he’s having a heck of a year.”
The No. 11 ranked Lundvall had three pins of his own on his way to winning his weight class. The junior won his final over Javier Medina of Denison.
“That’s his first Hawkeye 10 title and he’s a kid that’s grown up a lot each year to now from his freshman year. It takes a lot to progress and get better each year and each time he takes the mat, and he’s done that and he’s looking pretty good. He’s hungry to get a state medal this year.”
Koehler, the top ranked 215-pounder in Class 2A, spent a total of 3:49 seconds on the mat in his three victories, all falls. In the finals, the senior finished Lewis Central’s Paxton Blanchard in the finals for the third time this season. The conference title is the Northern Colorado commits’ third in his career.
“He’s pinner,” Weber said of the Rams’ all-time leading in falls. “He has the record for a reason. It was good to see, once again, the progression. He beat that kid 4-0 in the dual (against Lewis Central) and went out and dominated him in the finals. You always love to see that. He has big goals as the returning state champ; he’s going to get everyone’s best shot. He just has to stay focused and keep doing what he does.”
The Rams’ Brody Black (120) lost in his finals to Lewis Central’s Zander Manz and Joseph Leick (126) was second after a major decision loss to Weston Porter of Lewis Central.
Drake Buthe (285) added a third-place medal and Benn Christiansen (138), and Jacob Aust added fourth place finishes for Glenwood.
