Rule infraction costs
Rams a road sweep
A rule infraction was all that prevented Glenwood from a road sweep against Kuemper Catholic in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball last Monday.
Glenwood picked up a 7-3 in game one in Carroll and was an inning into game two when Rams’ head coach Dave Clark was informed by the Kuemper coaches that starting pitcher Benn Christiansen started the game without the required days rest following his previous outing. After meeting with officials, the game was allowed to continue – with Christiansen leaving the game – with the Rams winning 14-2 on the scoreboard but the result was declared a 7-0 forfeit win in favor of the Knights despite.
“Their coach let me know after the first inning,” said Clark, who said the error was a clerical one on his spread sheet of pitched innings he keeps. “They must have a guy on their staff that tracks other teams. It’s just how it goes. We won14-2 but we didn’t, we lost 7-0. I won’t make that mistake again.”
The Rams had a strong showing in the opening game, collecting 12 hits on offense and committing just one error defensively.
Ryan Turner picked up the win on the mound scattering five hits and three earned runs while striking out eight.
Christiansen was 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple and an RBI. Turner helped his own cause with two hits and an RBI.
Charles Mayhall took the loss for the Knights. The junior allowed four hits and three earned runs.
Christiansen threw 19 pitches in the game two before giving way to Ben Carlo out of the bullpen. Carlo allowed just one hit and no earned runs in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Korbin Pelzer was 3-for-3 with two RBIs in game two.
