Sioux City North too much for Glenwood in 5-2 loss

Sioux City North built a 3-1 halftime lead and held on the second half for a 5-2 victory over Glenwood in non-conference boys soccer Thursday.

The Stars (6-2) got on the board in the second minute only to see the Rams’ Caden Johnson match it with a goal of his own a minute later. But Sioux City North would find the back of the net twice more in the first half to take control.

Glenwood coach Cort Lovato called the loss a tough one against a “good and disciplined team.”

“They were able to get out and put one away early, Johnson was able to score on the ensuing kickoff,” Lovato said. “We had spoken with the team that their goalkeeper would be playing off his line most of the match. Caden saw this and took advantage, it was a great strike. We were not able to keep the momentum for the rest of the half.

“We as coaches and players believed we could compete and come away with a win this match. It did not happen and now we have some things to work on next week in training.”

The Stars added to their lead in the 43rd minute and again in the 45th.

Johnson got the Rams on the board once again in the 75th minute.

Ram goalkeeper Casey Godbout had nine saves.

Atlantic 0

Jade Nanfito scored four goals and added two assists for Glenwood in a 10-0 rout of Atlantic in Hawkeye 10 Conference boys soccer last Monday.

Glenwood was in control of the match from the opening kickoff.

Caden Johnson got the Rams on the board in the ninth minute with an unassisted goal. Jackson Wray added two more scores and Johnson another before halftime.

Nanfito put in all four of his goals in the second half, three coming in an 11-minute span of the second half: the first off a penalty kick, another off an assist from Wray and his third on a Johnson assist. Nanfito picked up his last goal in the 65th minute on another Johnson assist.

The Rams final goal came from Collin Lincoln in the 75th minute.

“This was a complete match played by the boys,” said Glenwood coach Cort Lovato. “All three levels were in sync and functioning properly. It is not very often a player accumulates 10 points in a match, but Johnson and Nanfito did it on the same night. I am pleased we have a 2-match winning streak, however Thursday night against Sioux City North will be a more difficult challenge.”

Johnson finished with two goals and four assists. Wray had an assist to go with his two goals.
