Sherry, Sanders take home titles at CB Classic

COUNCIL BLUFFS - Glenwood’s Anthony Sherry and Caleb Sanders won their weight classes and Glenwood finished sixth as a team at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic last weekend at the Mid-America Center.

The tournament, considered by many to be the top tournament in Iowa this season, featured over 100 ranked wrestlers from 39 schools in five states.

A pair of Nebraska teams led the team standings. Lincoln (Neb.) East won the team title with 497.5 points while Kearney, Neb. was the runner up with 462. Fort Dodge led all Iowa teams with a third place finish.

Glenwood’s 333.5 points put them third among Iowa teams all in the top six.
Not bad for a team that’s had trouble closing out tournaments strong the last two seasons, according to Glenwood coach Brad Asche.

“We got a lot of matches in and got a lot better I think,” Asche said. “We saw a lot of things we liked. The things I took out of Saturday was we won matches in those first and second place and third place matches, or whatever we had to win to get a little more team points on the board and finish higher. We didn’t walk away defeated. We left feeling pretty good because we won those matches.”

The Rams capped their strong showing in Council Bluffs – five top seven medal winners – with championships by Sherry and Sanders.

The 182-pound Sherry (12-1) won a tight 5-3 decision over Olathe South’s Nick Jouret in the finals. Jouret is the top ranked 182-pounder in the largest class in Kansas.

“He wrestled very impressively on Friday and on Saturday he faced some guys who didn’t really want to wrestle him and wanted to just play defense,” Asche said. “He definitely went after it. He was the aggressor in every match.”

Sanders knocked off a pair of highly ranked foes in his run to the heavyweight title. The Glenwood senior, who improved to 14-0 at the tournament, won an ultimate tie-breaker 3-2 over Kearney’s Lee Herrington in the finals.

“He’d wrestled both of those guys before with the same outcome but to be able to beat two nationally ranked kids, that’s impressive,” Asche said. “He showed his talent at heavyweight knocking them off.”

Trevor Anderson picked up a third place finish in a 145-pound bracket that features a dozen ranked wrestlers. Noah Carter (195) and Isaac Bales (220) both added seventh place finishes.

Rams sweep pair in H-10

Glenwood improved its dual record to 5-0 on the season with a sweep of Council Bluffs St. Albert and Harlan in a Hawkeye 10 Conference triangular in Council Bluffs last Tuesday.

The Rams recorded a 78-6 win – including 10 forfeits – over the host Falcons and a 43-29 victory over Harlan.

“We wrestled a little flat, and weren’t ready our first dual, but Brett Mower picked up two nice falls for the team, and Trevor Anderson had a couple of wins,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche

Mower (170 pounds) and Anderson (145), along with Dalton Bell (106), Ryker Case (113), Jordan Renshaw (152/160), Brett Mowers (170), Isaac Bales (220) and Caleb Sanders (285) recorded two wins each for the Rams.
