Schraft wins gold, Rams third on day one at state track

Janette Schraft got her first Class 3A gold medal and the Glenwood girls are third in the team standings after day one at the Iowa State Co-ed Track and Field Meet Thursday in Des Moines.

The Rams tallied 12 points to trail only first place Iowa Falls Aiden (18 points) and second place Davenport Assumption (14).

The Rams kicked off the day with a blistering, school-record time in the shuttle hurdle relay to advance to Saturday’s finals. The team of Audrey Arnold, Marissa Audesmore, Sami Parr and Elle Scarborough ran a 1:06.10 to win the heat and top the field heading into the finals.

After a tight first lap, Schraft separated herself from the field of 3,000-meter runners and never trailed again in winning her third career gold in the event – she won twice previously at East Mills – and eighth gold medal overall in her career.

Jaeda Wilson and Coryl Matheny both added to the Rams’ point totals with seventh place medals in the 400-meters and the high jump, respectively.

Glenwood’s Bailey Ostrander ran a 13.42 to place 19th in the 100-meters and Sydney Biermann had a top toss of 112 feet, 10 inches to place 12th in the discus while the he 4x800-meter relay team of Abby McIntyre, Lauren Becker, Erin Schultz and Emma Hughes placed 11th with a time of 10:02.48.

The Glenwood boys finished day one without a point but had some strong performances.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Brett Mower, Sam McIntyre, Mason Parks and Parson Covington placed 22nd with a time of 8:35.41.

Zach Vondra placed 22nd in the 200-meter dash and Christian Stanislav was 17th in the 100-meter dash.

In the Class 1A portion on Thursday afternoon, the Fremont-Mills boys opened their state meet by advancing its shuttle hurdle relay to Saturday’s finals. The foursome of James Switzer, Colton Hauschild, Seth Malcom and Austin Gartner won their heat and recorded the fourth fasted qualifying time with a 1:01.76.

The state track and field meet continues Friday morning with Class 3A and 2A competition beginning at 9 a.m.
