Rams sixth at West Des Moines tourney
The trio of Glenwood wrestlers reached the finals and the Rams placed sixth as a team at the West Des Moines Valley Invitational on Saturday.
“We got sixth but it was a really good day for us,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche. “We were in first after the first two rounds and the kids came out and got us some pins and on the board early.”
The Rams' Jesse Bendt (132 pounds) reached the finals along with Zach Magnussen (160) and Hunter Hoffman (182). While all three lost their final matches, Asche said the three competed hard against very good competition all tournament.
“Jesse lost to the top ranked kid in the state so it was a really good weekend for us,” Asche said. “We're getting better week to week and we keep trying to emphasize this really doesn't matter right now, it's what we're building up to that matters.”
The host Tigers won the tournament.
Rams are
4-0 in duals
The Glenwood wrestling team stayed perfect in its fourth straight dual to open the season with a sweep of Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln and Shenandoah on Thursday.
The Rams, who were delayed arriving at the meet by an accident on Highway 34 en route to Shenandoah, got a slow start against Abraham Lincoln trailing 28-0 to open the match. Glenwood would go on to win seven straight matches by fall to pull out the 42-34 victory.
Glenwood downed the host Mustangs 69-12 in the capper. The Rams lost their first match at 106 pounds then won 11 of the next 12 to secure the win.
“It was an interesting night starting it out with the wreck we were behind on (Highway) 34,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche. “I think the guys weren't really ready, we had to shorten our warm up time, and we had to come back and we really took control of the situation. And I thought we took some good strides in the Shenandoah dual too. I was very satisfied with the effort we put in.”
Seth Warren keyed a run of seven straight falls for Glenwood with a pin at 126 pounds.
“The guys who had been out there before really got the job done,” Asche said.
