Rams run well at Kansas tune-up for Drake Relays

The Glenwood boys and girls track team got in a nice primer meet for the upcoming Drake Relays by traveling to the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan. last weekend.

The Glenwood boys qualified in five events for the Kansa Relays: Nate Kennedy in the 100-meter and 400-meter dash and the Rams’ 4x100, 4x200 and the 4x400-meter relays qualified for Kansas.

Kennedy ran a 11.27 in the 100-meter preliminaries finishing 24th out of 44. Kennedy qualified for the 400m dash after placing 3rd in his heat with a clocking of 49.47. Kennedy was seeded fifth in Saturday’s finals but was scratched for precautionary reasons due to a tightness in a hamstring.

The Rams’ 4x100 relay team of Joey Saddler, Jon Lee, Cooper Silvius and Zach Vondra finished 59th with a time of :46.38.

The 4x400 relay team of Christian Stanislav, Brody Weddum, Kohen Watson and Kennedy ran 3:27.36 to clock the ninth fastest time in the preliminaries but came up just short of qualifying for the finals.

The 4x200 relay team of Saddler, Vondra, Watson and Kennedy finished 12th overall out of 36 teams, clocking a 1:33.29. The Rams finished third in their heat.

The Glenwood  girls top finish came from its sprint medley relay team of Bailey Ostrander, Grace Presley, Danielle Hardcastle and Abby McIntyre. The quartet is the first Ram relay to place in the top 10 in Kansas after their seventh place showing.

Sadey Allgood, Devon Bomer, Elle Scarborough and Lauren Becker placed 25th in the 4x200-meter relay and the 4x800 team of Erin Schultz, Lacey Jackson, Kate Kaufman and Danielle Hardcastle placed 38th.

The 4x400 relay team of Becker, Jackson, Presley and Ostrander ran a season’s best.
Audrey Arnold ran a 16.62 in the 100-meter hurdles to place 16th.

Rams second at A.L./T.J. Girls Invite

The third time wasn’t quite the charm.

Attempting to win its third straight track meet, the Glenwood girls came up short, finishing second at the Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson Girls Invitational Thursday at Wickersham Athletic Complex.

Abraham Lincoln won the team title, edging the Rams 115 to 109 in the team scores. The Lynx didn’t clinch the meet title until the final event of the night, the 4x400-meter relay. Abraham Lincoln, who led by four points heading into the relay, picked up a second place finish to the Rams’ third place time of 4:21.95 to hang on for the meet title.

In all, the Rams won one event – the distance medley relay – and placed in the top four 12 other events.

Earning individual second place medals for the Rams were Abby McIntyre (800-meter run), Audrey Arnold (100-meter hurdles) and Lauren Becker (high jump) and the 4x100-meter relay team of Sadey Allgood, Devon Bomer, Bailey Ostrander and Abi Schultz.

Glenwood girls win LC meet

The Glenwood girls track team won its third straight meet of the season and Nate Kennedy set a new school record in the 400-meters at the Council Bluffs Lewis Central Co-ed Track Meet Tuesday.

For the Glenwood girls, the results have become typical for this deep team against the 10 team field: the Rams won two relays, didn’t win any open events but placed in the top four in 13 events.

The Rams edged Sioux City East 126 to 113 in the team scores. Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln was third with 81 points.
Glenwood girls coach Cory Faust said it was a “good night with a lot of great efforts.”  

“It’s hard to pick out individuals when we have so many girls running well and improving each meet,” Faust said.
Kate Kaufman had a strong night with her season’s bests in the 1500 and her split in 4x800-meter relay. The relay team of Kaufman, Lauren Becker Katelyn Malcom and Lacey Jackson won gold with a time of 10:24.08.

Becker, who also tied with Danielle Hardcastle for 2nd in the high jump, ran the 4x800 for this first time Tuesday, posting a respectable 2:34.  

Malcom finished third in the 400-meters and ran a strong leg on the 4x8.  

“When we have her, and Abi and Erin Schultz - who are all also playing soccer this year - our lineup is especially solid,” Faust said of Malcom. “If we can get all the girls healthy and running well at the same time in a few weeks, it will be really fun to watch.”

The Rams picked up it’s other gold medal in the distance medley relay. Grace Presley, Bailey Ostrander, Hardcastle and Aubrey McIntyre ran a 4:36.97 to top the field.

Glenwood also picked up second place medals from it’s 4x100-meters and 4x200-meter relay team of Sadey Allgood, Devon Bomer, Elle Scarborough and Jaeda Wilson.

“As good as the meet was, there are still a lot of things to work on,” Faust said. “I’d like to see the girls more consistent, and that comes with attention to detail in practice and meets.  We need to be hungry to improve and be all we can be each time out.”

The Glenwood boys placed third to team champion Atlantic and the runner up Titans. The Rams finished with 99 points.
“This was another high quality meet with loads of competition,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “It was our last opportunity to improve times for Drake Relays. We emphasized improving on a couple of relays.”

Kennedy was key in those improvements.

The Ram senior blistered the track in the 400-meters with a time of 48.96, which broke his school record of 49.33 from last season, and is the fastest time recorded in the state this year. Kennedy later ran a 48.2 split on the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay to edge Atlantic for gold.

The 4x400 finale was an outstanding race to the wire in which we improved our overall time by three seconds,” Starner said, adding the time secured the Rams’ spot in this week’s Drake Relays.

Kennedy added to his medal haul with a gold in the 200-meter dash.

Glenwood also picked up a gold medal in the sprint medley relay with Joey Saddler, Jon Lee, Zach Vondra and Kohen Watson combining to run a 1:37.42.
