Rams first, second at H-10 meet

COUNCIL BLUFFS - The Glenwood girls scored a Hawkeye 10 Conference meet record 193 points to win their fifth team title in six years Thursday at Council Bluffs Lewis Central.

The Rams ran away from the conference field with 193 points, the most ever amassed at the conference meet. Atlantic was a distant second with 115 points.

The Glenwood boys were second in the team standings to Atlantic by a score of 145 to 125.

The Glenwood girls won nine of 17 events, placed in the top three in five others and double-scored in a total of nine events.

“There were so many girls that performed really well, it’s hard to even single any out,” said Glenwood girls coach Cory Faust. “I think this meet again shows our depth of talent.  The girls scored more points than any team has ever scored in Hawkeye 10 Conference Meet history, and we actually didn’t even run our best possible lineup due to some girls still nursing injuries.

“We’ll need everyone at or near full strength as we head into the state qualifying meet, and especially for the state meet.”

Jaeda Wilson and Janette Schraft both had strong performances for the Rams.
Wilson won the 100 and 400 and was second in the 200. She also ran a leg on the gold medal-winning 4x400-mete relay.

“She seems to always peak at the end of the season and run her best in the biggest meets,” Faust said of Wilson.  “I think that says a lot about her attitude, preparation and mind set. Like so many of our girls, she is very dedicated and coachable.”

Schraft won the 800 and 1,500 as well as the 400-meter hurdles.

The Rams also picked up gold medals from Coryl Matheny (high jump), Audrey Arnold (long jump) and their 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays.

Glenwood boys coach Mark Starner said it was easy to see why his team was able to pick up 125 points: his team placed in every event and double-placed in seven.

The Glenwood boys, who won three events at Thursday’s meet, have won or placed second in the conference meet in 10 out of the last 11 years.

“The name of the game is to score and as many as possible, while we may have underachieved in some areas, we definitely over achieved in some areas that made up for those short comings,” said Starner, whose team has won or finished second in 10 of the last 11 conference meets.

The Rams won three events in all and were second or third in six.

“We’re extremely proud of how our kids performed,” Starner said. “We had several season best performances on the evening, which is what we’re working towards as we approach the championship season.  We had all but one relay set a new season-best, the 4x100 and they were .06 seconds off of their best.”

The Rams’ 4x100-meter relay team of Jon Lee, Zach Vondra, Cooper Silvius and Christian Stanislav won the gold. The 4x200-meter relay team of Jack Hughes, Silas Bales, Stanislav and Vondra also picked up a gold in a new season-best time.

But it was the 4x800-meter relay team of Brett Mower, Sam McIntyre, Mason Parks and Parson Covington that made the biggest leap. The quartet smashed their season-best time by eight seconds to win gold.

Stanislav added a second place showing in the 100 and Brenden Godbout had a strong day in the hurdles, placing third in the 400-meter hurdles, fifth in 110-meter hurdles and anchoring the shuttle hurdle relay to a third place finish.

Glenwood’s girls and boys track teams are back in action Thursday at the state qualifying meet in Carroll. The Iowa State Track Meet kicks off May 16 in Des Moines.

Rams first, second at Atlantic

The Glenwood girls tied for first and the boys team was second at the Atlantic Co-ed Relays last Monday in Atlantic.

Glenwood’s girls team won five events and finished with 137.5 points to tie with the host Trojans. The Atlantic boys edged Glenwood 139 to 126.5 in the team standings.

The Glenwood girls were missing six contributors – three girls were at soccer and three others were held out to rest up for the conference meet – but were still able to tie for the team championship.  

“I was really proud of the attitude and effort of the girls again,” said Glenwood girls coach Cory Faust.  “They showed resilience and toughness in many different ways.”

Audrey Arnold (long jump) and Coryl Matheny (high jump) won individual golds while the Rams’ 4x100-meters, shuttle hurdle and sprint medley relays took home top honors. Glenwood also double-placed in four events.

In addition to winning the long jump, Arnold picked up gold medals in the 4x100 and shuttle hurdle relays. Matheny ran the anchor on the sprint medley relay to win two golds and Bailey Ostrander picked a pair of gold medals on her own as part of the 4x100 an sprint medley.

Rams’ 4x800m relay team of Emma Hughes, Lauren Becker, Danielle Hardcastle and Abby McIntyre placed fourth in a season-best time of 10:19.69.

“I’m excited to see what we can do at the conference meet,” Faust said. “The girls have won the Hawkeye 10 Team Championship 4 of the last 5 years.  I think we have a good chance to repeat t

The Glenwood boys won four events on the night.

Starner used the Atlantic meet as a chance to experiment with some lineup changes and he was happy with the results.

“We mixed up a few things trying to tweak some events for conference and state qualifying meet,” he said. “We were able to hit several personal and season bests.”

 Zach Vondra had a top leap of 20 feet, one inch to win top honors and ran legs on the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relays that won gold. His third place time in the 200-meters was a season-best.

The sprint medley relay team of Jon Lee, Christian Stanislav, Logen Clark and Silas Bales finished first with a season-best time of 1:38.32.

Starner thought Bales’ 51.5 in the anchor was the difference.

“He put together a near flawless race and poured it on off the final turn and never looked back,” Starner said.

Parson Covington had a strong meet, anchoring both the 4x800 and 4x400-meter relays to second and third place showings, respectively.

“Parson has become a staple for these two relays as he always shows a tremendous about of  determination and grit as the anchor and always has the best split within the quartet of runners,” Starner said. “We want the baton in his hands at the end of the race for sure.”

Brenden Godbout set a pair of personal-bests in placing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles and anchoring the shuttle hurdle relays to a second place finish.
