Rams bounce back for 8-0 win at Treynor

Kyle Jorgensen, Sam Lampman, John Palmer and Turner Reich each scored two goals for Glenwood in an 8-0 victory over Treynor in boys soccer Thursday.

Glenwood coach Cort Lovato said his team took control early and never let up.

“The boys were able to score in the first couple minutes,” he said. “It was a big change from Tuesday at Sioux City North, which was our focus. We needed to come out and play at a fast pace. The boys were able to do that and continue the pace the rest of the half and game.”

Lovato was concerned about Treynor’s top two scorers up top – Luke Mieska and Keaton Mann – but his defense rose to the challenge and goal-keeper Minh Ngo helped the Rams to their fourth shutout of the season.    

“The ‘D’ was aware of where their goal scorers were at all times,” Lovato said. “The D was able to get a ‘clean sheet,’ they played great. To be able to keep Treynor from scoring sets the tone for the remaining three regular season games.

Overall I was happy with the boys and their ability to bounce back from the game against SC North.”

Glenwood 0

Sioux City North held Glenwood without a goal for the second straight game in a 4-0 victory in Sioux City last Monday.

The Stars (4-7) scored two goals in the first two minutes of the match and dictated tempo for much of the opening half. Glenwood (5-8) never seemed to recover.

Glenwood coach Cort Lovato called the match “frustrating.”

“We were unable to match the pace of SCN to start the game. Going down two goals in the first two minutes is demoralizing,” he said. “The boys kept playing and picked up their pace to match SCN the rest of the half. The third goal in the 40th minute was a back-breaker. The goal was the result of a ball not being cleared cleanly and falling to the feet of a SCN striker. We as coaches need to do a better job of making sure the boys are ready to play at pace to start games.”

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Rams with matches against Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, Denison and Creston remaining.

“Our remaining games will be against teams that possesses the same pace of SCN, however the boys can play at that pace,” he said. “It will be fun to watch how we play the remaining games of the regular season.

Glenwood 0

A header by Dalton Gross in the 60th minute proved the difference for Harlan in a 1-0 win over Glenwood in Hawkeye 10 Conference boys soccer last Monday.

The game’s only goal came off a set piece following a foul mid-way through the second half in a match the Rams could not seem to get on track. Glenwood had quality shots on goal but couldn’t find the back of the net.

“The boys played their style of soccer in the first half, unfortunately we couldn’t score,” said Glenwood coach Cort Lovato. “The boys had multiple shots from inside the 18 that didn’t go in, it was frustrating.”

Lovato said still seemed to control possession much of the second half until  a brief spell where Harlan turned up the tempo into a direct play and run style of game.

“We were not able to match their speed in this style of play and the result was a foul right outside the 18,” Lovato said. “That free kick turned into their goal.”

Ram goalkeeper Minh Dang Ngo recorded nine saves.
