Rams’ go 2-0 at A.L. Classic

The Glenwood baseball team used strong pitching and some clutch hitting to win a pair of games in the Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln Classic played in Glenwood Saturday.

The Rams (5-11) got by A-D-M 10-7 and downed LeMars 6-4.

“We had two pretty good outings from our pitchers, Eli Bales and Michael Radford. “It was somewhat different to previous games this week, but they both pitched really well for us Saturday.”

Bales started the A-D-M game and scattered eight hits and five earned runs while striking out seven in six innings of work. Chad Fisher came on in relief in the seventh to earn the save.

In game two, Michael Radford tossed a complete-game, giving up just four hits and no earned runs while fanning seven for the win.

“He threw lots of strikes and didn’t allow an earned run. He threw very well,” Schulz said of Radford.
The Rams recorded 16 hits in the two games combined – six for extra-bases, including two home runs.

“We probably didn’t face their best pitching but we hit it well,” Schulz said. “After the (Council Bluffs) St. Albert game on Friday and just not playing well and in two losses to Harlan, it was good to see us bounce back.

Kaden Wray led the way with four hits including a home run and three RBIs. Andrew Holliday added three hits, including two doubles, and drove in a run.

Cade Van Ness belted a three run home run in the win over A-D-M.

C.B. St. Albert 15,
Glenwood 0, 4 innings

Council Bluffs St. Albert grabbed the early momentum with a five run first inning and never let off the gas in a 15-0, four inning victory over Glenwood in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball Friday.

Garret Reisz was dominant on the mound for the Falcons. The senior struck out five and allowed just one hit to earn the win.

“They’re a very good team and he’s a senior who does a little bit of everything for them,” said Glenwood coach Kurt Schulz. “He threw very well. I’d guess he was hitting mid-80s and locating pretty well. He was tough. And they’re a really good hitting team and we weren’t ready for them.”

Cade Van Ness double and Kaden Wray singled for the Rams’ two hits.

Andrew Holiday took the loss on the mound. The junior allowed seven hits and four earned runs.

Allan Powers-Wettestad went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs for St. Albert.

Cyclones sweep Glenwood

Harlan swept Glenwood 12-11 and 11-1 in a Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball double-header Thursday in Glenwood.

The Rams got down 12-2 after the Cyclones played 10 runs to open the fourth inning but they battled back. Glenwood scored eight runs of their own in the bottom of the frame and one more in the sixth but could no closer in the 12-11 loss.

The two teams combined to use eight pitchers and commit nine errors in the game.

“I think (Harlan) Coach (Steve) Daegas and I, even though it was close for us, would rather not remember that game,” said Glenwood coach Kurt Schulz. “It was a not a well played game.

“It was hot, there’s no doubt about it, and the first game was a higher temperature than the second game but we had some opportunities where we could have won the first one and we didn’t. We just didn’t have that killer opportunity.”

Game two was all Harlan. The Cyclones plated runs in every inning of the five inning victory.

“We got down and we weren’t willing to battle,” Schulz said.

The Rams could muster just three hits off Cyclone pitching in the game two loss. In game one, Cade Van Ness Pierce Harrington and Logan Strong had two hits each.

Colton Schutte took the game one loss on the hill. The junior allowed six hits and six earned runs with five strikeouts.
Harrington was credited with the game two loss after allowing 12 hits and six earned runs in four innings of work.

Glenwood 18,
Creston 9

Glenwood exploded for nine runs in the top of the ninth inning to down Creston 18-9 in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball last Tuesday.

The Rams (3-8) trailed 9-8 heading into the seventh when Cade Van Ness belted a home run to leftfield to send the game into extra-innings. After a scoreless eighth, Glenwood sent nine batters to the plate in the ninth, taking advantage of four walks, two Panther errors and a wild pitch, to score nine runs on four hits.

Van Ness, Josh Ruth, Eli Bales and Michael Radford each recorded three hits for Glenwood. Van Ness tripled, hit his first home run of the season and drove in four runs. Radford added three RBIs and Colton Schutte, Andrew Holiday and Pierce Harrington each drove in two.

Harrington, who was one of six Ram pitcher to take the mound, was credited with the win. He junior allowed three hits and struck out three in 1 1/23 innings.
