Saving Some Of Today For Tomorrow - Time Capsule Being Assembled
Sometime around July 4, 2076 – as America is celebrating its Tricentennial – a time capsule offering a glimpse into what life was like in Mills County back in 2026 will be opened by local dignitaries.
What they’ll uncover is a mixed collection of items from Mills County citizens, businesses and elected officials.
The time capsule is still in the process of being assembled by the Glenwood Betterment and Beautification committee as part of the community’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
“The plan is to have it opened right before the Fourth (of July) in 2076,” said Audra Krueger, the committee member spearheading the project. “That way, at the 300th, they’ll know what we did and what was going on in the world.”
Over two dozen items have already been contributed for the time capsule project, including Semiquincentennial proclamations signed by both Glenwood Mayor Angie Winquist and the Mills County Board Of Supervisors, an America 250 flag, a letter in a bottle written by a local youth, patriotic crafts and artwork, family photos, a Rams Saving Bank passbook, miniature Glenwood State Bank paper weight and the July 1 and July 8 issues of The Opinion-Tribune that featured photos of local activities that took place as part of Mills County’s America 250 celebration. There will also be a drone photo of Glenwood-area citizens unfurling a large American flag.
Krueger said the plan is include a list of national and world happenings and possibly a list of what various things cost in 2026.
There is still time to contribute items for the time capsule, Krueger noted. Individuals, families, businesses or organizations interested in doing so can reach out through the Glenwood Betterment and Beautification Facebook page.
Krueger said the items will be stored in a durable, air-tight container and put away for safe keeping until 2076 in a suitable building that will still be around 50 years from now - possibly the Mills County Courthouse or Mills County Historical Museum.
