Glenwood second at Atlantic tourney

Glenwood lost its opening match and went on to win its final four to finished second at the Atlantic Volleyball Invitational Saturday.

The Rams (9-6) lost their opener 13-21, 13-21 to Council Bluffs St. Albert before rattling off wins against the host Trojans 21-13, 21-13, Treynor 21-14, 17-21, 15-8, Winterset 21-15, 15-21, 15-10 and Underwood 23-21, 21-18.

“I thought we played some good matches and we’re making progress,” said Glenwood coach Chelsey Harvey. “We passed pretty well and hit it well. We just have to keep making those improvements and getting better.”

Glenwood’s lone loss came in the first match of the day. Early morning matches and their slow starts continue to be a problem for her team, Harvey said.

“That was early for us and we played like it,” she said. “We got better as the day went on. We would have liked to get that match back.”

Elle Scarborough and Josyln Lewis led the Rams in kills in the tournament. Scarborough pounded a season-high 18 kills in the win over Treynor.

“They were big weapons for us and they led us in kills,” Harvey said.

Harvey also commended the play of Brynlee Arnold in the middle of the Rams’ defense.

“For not having played a lot last year and stepping up and taking on that role as middle blocker, she’s doing a great job,” Chelsey said of the 6-foot-3 sophomore who leads the Rams with 27 blocks this season.

Red Oak 25-25-25
Glenwood 18-17-18

Red Oak smacked down 39 kills in a 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 sweep of Glenwood in Hawkeye 10 Conference volleyball last Tuesday in Red Oak.

The Tigers (8-4) hit .235 as a team and never let up in the victory.

“Red Oak couldn’t miss,” said Glenwood coach Chelsey Harvey. “They really hit it well and we didn’t get to enough of their shots. And we had a tough time getting our shots down. They’re a good team and they’re going to be tough to contend with.”

Chloe Johnson led Red Oak with 14 kills and Sophie Walker added nine.

Glenwood had its struggles getting shots down, hitting .027 as a team with 27 kills. But Harvey liked her team’s offense rhythms even when hits weren’t connecting.

“We passed it really well,” she said. “We moved the ball and got the shots we wanted. We just couldn’t get them in. Red Oak did a great job digging up shots.”

Kelly Embray recorded 12 sets assists and Grace Boles nine. Joslyn Lewis and Elle Scarborough picked up seven kills each.
