Hot shooting lifts Glenwood past Clarinda, 72-38

Glenwood hit 6-of-10 first half three pointers and 13 different Rams scored in a 72-38 rout of Clarinda in Hawkeye 10 Conference boys basketball last Tuesday.

The Rams (8-8 overall, 4-4 in the conference) turned a nine-point lead after a quarter into 35-15 halftime lead thanks to some hot shooting from the perimiter and patience on the offensive end.

“We worked on it all day yesterday,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte of the Cardinals’ zone defense. “We thought we’d see a lot of 2-3 and possibly some 3-2 so we really concentrated on ball movement, post touches, getting the ball in the short corner and getting the ball swung. For the most part I thought our movement was pretty solid. I think we were patient with our shots. We turned down good shots to get great shots and that was good to see.”

Glenwood quickly turned its 20 point halftime lead into a 46-17 lead with 3:17 to go in the third quarter thanks mostly to its defense. The Rams length on the defense end gave the Cardinals – who had just one regular over 6-foot-1 – fits all night in the passing lanes and around the basket.

“I thought we got out of the gates slow but we started cranking things up,” Schulte said. “We obviously have big wing spans with some of our guys and they struggle against that. We have to continue to get big and take up space in the middle.”

All 14 suited up Rams played and 12 scored at least one point in the win. Ridge Fisher led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points. Jacob Lewis added 10 and Andrew Blum nine.
