Wolverines place third at East Union tournament

The East Mills volleyball team finished 3-1 and placed third at the East Union Invitational Volleyball Tournament Saturday in Afton.

The Wolverines (9-8 overall, 3-1 in the Corner Conference) finished 3-0 in pool play by defeating Lamoni 21-5, 21-17, Mt. Ayr 24-22, 12-21, 15-12 and East Union 21-14, 17-21, 15-9.

East Mills fell to Shenandoah in the semifinals 26-28, 11-25 to finish third.

“It was a tremendous effort,” said East Mills coach Connie Blank. “We came from behind in the first set and battled back and forth.  We just couldn’t find our rhythm.  Our serve receive struggled and we have to do a better job of blocking. But overall for the day,  we were very happy with great teamwork and hustle.”

Jessie Doyle led the Wolverines with 25 kills in the tournament. Emily Ray added 15 kills.

The East Mils volleyball team dug themselves a hole every set but the fourth, and had to battle back against a very scrappy Nishnabotna team in a 22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-11, 11-15 loss last Tuesday.

“I’m very proud of the girls effort, they played hard,” said Connie Blank. “We need to put more pressure on the other team by being more aggressive with our attacks.  This was a long hard fought match.”

Jessie Doyle recorded 13 and Samantha Opal 11 of the Wolverines 45 kills.

Emmy Duysen had 29 set assists and 19 digs.

East Mills 25-25-25
Clarinda Academy 3-7-7

The East Mills volleyball team evened its record up at 6-6 last Monday with a 25-3, 25-7. 25-7 sweep of Clarinda Academy.

The Wolverines (6-6 overall, 3-0 in the Corner Conference) finished with 34 ace serves and 25 kills against the Eagles while hitting .622.

Jessie Doyle led the way for East Mills with eight kills. Stephanie Frink added seven and Elizabeth Walker four.
Emmy Duysen had 10 set assists and 11 aces.
