Fish Fry-days are back for the Lenten season at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Glenwood.
For over 30 years, the Holy Rosary Knights of Columbus have been hosting Friday fish fries in Kaufman Hall during the Lenten season.
During the Lenten season, Fridays are a day of abstinence from eating meat in the Catholic Church and fish fries have grown in popularity across the country. At Holy Rosary Church, the fish and side dishes are always fresh, but for many of the regulars (both Catholic and non-Catholic), the fish fries are as much about the opportunity to socialize with friends and neighbors as it is about the food.
Attendance at the fish fries usually peaks during the middle of Lent, when it’s typical for the Knights to serve more than 300 dinners.
The fish fry menu at Holy Rosary Church includes fried carp, fried and baked pollock, potatoes (baked or fries), mac and cheese, cole slaw, bread, drinks and desserts. The meals are prepared and served by a team of volunteers, including many who have worked at the fish fries for several years.
The money raised at the fish fries help the Knights support causes and programs throughout the year in the church and Glenwood community.
Four more fish fries are scheduled this year at Holy Rosary Church – March 21, 28, and April 4 and 11. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the food is served until it’s gone.
The cost of meals is $13 for adults and $4 for children. Desserts are provided separate from the meal for a free-will offering to benefit various church groups.
