Angie Winquist Announces Candidacy For Mayor

Mayor Angie Winquist

Glenwood Mayor Angie Winquist has formally announced her candidacy for re-election.

“I am excited by the opportunity to continue serving our community and look forward to serving all of you,” Winquist said in a prepared statement.

Winquist was appointed mayor by the Glenwood City Council in December 2023 following the passing of the late Ron Kohn. The mayor position will be on the ballot in the Nov. 4 city election.

“For those unfamiliar with my background, I worked for the City of Glenwood from 2012 to 2021, serving as city clerk before becoming city administrator / finance director,” Winquist stated. “I bring over 30 years of experience as a credit and operations manager for a national distribution company.

“After two years of retirement, I was honored when several citizens asked me to consider seeking the mayoral appointment after the passing of our beloved Mayor Ron Kohn. I have truly enjoyed being back with the city, working alongside our new city administrator and city clerk. Having held both of their positions, I believe I can offer valuable assistance in their training and support the office whenever needed.”

Winquist noted that as mayor, she presides over city council meetings and works closely with city hall staff, department heads and city council members.

“Our accomplishments are a testament to our collaborative teamwork, but we still have a lot of work to do,” she said. “This cooperative approach extends to our citizens as well; I believe in open communication and actively listening to your concerns and ideas. Together, we can continue to build a stronger, more vibrant Glenwood for everyone.”

Winquist said she’s committed to fiscal responsibility and will continue to prioritize the efficient use of city funds to avoid unnecessary tax increases.

One project Winquist said she’s in the early stages of is bringing a splash pad to Glenwood.

“I believe this would be a wonderful addition for our children and families,” she said. “My goal is to secure funding for this project without using any tax dollars. This will involve seeking grants, donations, and organizing community fundraisers to make this dream a reality for Glenwood.”

Winquist represents Glenwood on several boards and committees, including the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency, RPA18 Board – (Iowa DOT funding for road projects), West Central Community Action Board, Mills County Conference Board, Mills County Emergency Management Commission (MCEMC), Glenwood Redevelopment Corporation, Mills County Economic Development, Vision Iowa and Mills County YMCA.

Winquist and her husband, Stan, have lived in Glenwood for over 40 years, where they raised three children. They have four grandchildren.
