Marjorie Blackman, 88, Malvern

Marjorie Evelyn Blackman, age 88, of Malvern, died Dec. 30, 2008, at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. Funeral Services were held at Hertz Funeral Home in Glenwood on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, with Rev. Darrell Hopp officiating. Interment was in the Malvern Cemetery.

One of nine children of Cora Edna Alice Frednette (Moore) Hunt and Charlie Lee Hunt, she was born on her parent’s farm near Silver City, on Feb. 14, 1920. At the age of four, her family moved to the West Oak Community, north of Glenwood, where she attended country school at West Oak and Glenwood High School. She was baptized at West Oak Baptist Church and later became a member of the First Baptist Church in Glenwood. Following school, Mrs. Blackman worked in the homes of families needing extra help and assistance. In 1941, the family moved to the Hillsdale neighborhood, west of Malvern, and during the time of World War II, she worked at the crystal plant in Council Bluffs.

On March 30, 1946, she and Wayne Ernest Blackman were married at the First Baptist Church in Glenwood. They lived on a farm west of Malvern where they made their home for 62 years. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Evelyn Diane and Charles Lee Roy. In addition to her duties at home, Mrs. Blackman worked at the Malvern Egg Processing Plant, the Glenwood and Malvern care centers, and had a wallpapering and painting business. She loved working with flowers, gardening, and cooking. She was well known for her potato salad, deviled eggs and famous chocolate pie. For many years, she baked all the pies for the Ponderosa Truck Stop from her humble kitchen on the farm. Mr. and Mrs. Blackman also cleaned the First Baptist Church and the First Christian Church in Glenwood.

Mrs. Blackman was active in the First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and deaconess for many years. She was also an active member of the Farm Bureau Women’s group, the American Legion Auxiliary, and a 4-H leader. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and had taken many trips with their family. They especially loved the time spent with their granddaughter and great-granddaughters.

Mr. and Mrs. Blackman had been married 62 years at the time of his death on Nov. 2, 2008. She suffered a broken hip the morning of his visitation and died the following month.

She was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister; her parents; husband Wayne Blackman; son-in-law Duane Clay; sister May Johnson; brothers Ed Hunt; Lyle Hunt; Bacil Hunt; Burdette Hunt; and George “Jud” Hunt. She is survived by her children Diane Clay and Lee Blackman; one granddaughter; four great-granddaughters; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
