Malcom wins title, Rams fifth at Kansas tourney

Glenwood’s Matt Malcom won the 160-pound weight class and the Rams placed fifth as a team at the highly competitive Basehor-Linwood Bobcat Class in Kansas Saturday.

The tournament, which features 36 wrestling teams from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Colorado, crowned Goddard, Kan. as its team champion with 221 points. The Rams’ 115 points was good enough for fifth place.

“This was a good tournament for us,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche. “There were a lot of good teams and a lot of good wrestlers. We were able to get points for everybody and do well as a team despite not having Trevor (Anderson) with us. From outside perspective, we wrestled well. From a coaching perspective I thought we did real well but I see some things we need to work on and we hope to still reach out peak when it matters most.”

Anderson, the Rams’ 126 pound state qualifier from a year ago, sat out the tournament after suffering an injury in Thursday’s dual. Asche thinks Anderson could be ready to go by Saturday’s tournament at Urbandale.

Malcom won title after pinning all three of his opponents to reach Saturday’s finals where he won a 4-3 decision over John Blankenship of Platte County, Mo.

The Rams’ Anthony Sherry was second at 170-pounds. Glenwood also got a pair of seventh place finishes from Zach Haggstrom (195 pounds) and Kyle Griffin (220).
