Fremont-Mills 41

Woodbine blew open a tie game after the first quarter with a decisive 17-2 run to open the second quarter to lift the Tigers to a 55-41 victory over Fremont-Mills in Tabor last Tuesday night.

The two teams were locked up at 11-11 to open the second quarter but the Tigers (9-11) rattled off nine straight points as part of their 17-2 run to take a 28-13 lead with just under four minutes to go in the half. The Knights (10-8) struggled in the frame. They hit just 2-of-11 shots, went over four minutes with a point and turned the ball over nine times.

“We seem to have these stretches where we don’t play very well and it happens coincide when they start shooting well,” said Fremont-Mills coach Brett Weldon. “It was a tough trying to match their physicality and to match their intensity. But we think this was a good one to prepare us for the tournament.”

Fremont-Mills trailed 30-16 at the half. The Tigers’ lead swelled to 47-27 before the third quarter was over.

The Knights had their chances but could not solve the Tigers’ length in their 2-3 zone. For the game, they shot 31.2 percent from the field – 15-of-48 – and hit just 3-of-20 three point attempts. They were also out-rebounded by the Tigers 40 to 24.

F-M cut the margin to 14 in the fourth quarter but could get no closer.

“We had some open looks, in both halves really, but we didn’t shoot it well,” Weldon said. “If we’re not knocking down those outside shots, it’s tough to keep the floor space we need.”

Izzy Weldon paced the Knights with 11 points. Kaelynn Driskell added eight points.

Whitney Kuhlman led Woodbine with 15 points and seven rebounds.
