Hot-shooting Glenwood improves to 6-0 on season

Emma Hughes and Madison Camden combined to hit 10 three-pointers and Glenwood rolled to a 73-46 victory on the road in Harlan Saturday night.

The Class 4A, No. 1 ranked Rams (6-0 overall, 2-0 in the conference) shot a rather pedestrian 41.5 percent from the field overall (22-of-53) but hit 14-of-31 from behind the arc in the win.

Glenwood did get off to a slow start, however, and held just a 10-9 lead after a quarter. But the Rams exploded for 27 points in the second quarter to take a 37-26 lead into halftime.

“Overall, we played pretty well, it’s nice to get hot from the outside and see the kids, especially our bench, pick it up,” said Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen. “We stuck to our game plan and defended well and ran the floor and eventually that took a toll on our opponent and we got it done.”

Hughes was red-hot off the bench for the Rams. The senior hit 7-of-11 three’s, just one off the school record of eight set by Tabi Evans in 2008, and  finished with a game-high 22 points. The Rams’ bench contributed 35 points.

Camden was no less impressive. The junior guard hit 3-of-5 from behind the arc and finished with 18 points. Morgan Stanislav and Coryl Matheny pitched in eight points each.

Glenwood 80,
Creston 51

A 27-9 second quarter run and hot-shooting night carried Glenwood to an 80-51 victory over Creston in Hawkeye 10 Conference girls basketball Friday.

The Rams led 18-10 after the first quarter and blew to the game open with a 27-9 second quarter that saw them take a 45-19 lead into halftime. But in the third quarter, some ragged play caught Glenwood coach Brian Rasmussen’s eye.

“I think it’s hard, when you have a quarter like that and build a big lead like that against a really good team, to not get complacent and we came out in the third quarter a little flat,” said Rasmussen.

So the coach shuffled his lineup with five players in and five players out on substitutions. The shift-like, line change rotation appeared to work.

“I think we got the starters attention and the second five played really well and it went well for us,” he said. “I don’t know if we could do it every night, but that night it worked for us.”

The Rams shot 55.6 percent from the field (30-of-54) for the game, including 7-of-15 from behind the three-point line, and 13-of-15 at the free-throw line in the win.

Madison Camden led the Rams with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Jenna Hopp added 15 and Abby Hughes 10.

The game saw the return of All-Hawkeye 10 guard Elle Scarborough, who had missed the first four games with a knee injury. Rasmussen said his senior, four-year starter is working her way back into the lineup.

“We’re adjusting to having her back and trying to figure out where she serves the team best,” Rasmussen said of Scarborough, who had three points on 1-of-4 shooting in her return. “We’re obviously a better team with her on the court but we have a lot of kids that can play and shoot and defend. We’re trying to figure out where she fits best to make the rest of the squad better.”
