Glenwood wins soccer opener 5-1

The Glenwood girls soccer team used a quick start to get off to a winning start this season with a 5-1 victory on the road at Sioux City North Friday.

The Rams’ Taylor Bardsley opened the scoring for Glenwood just two minutes into the game. The quick start gave the Rams the momentum they never let go of.

“We were able to find the back of the net early in the game,” said Glenwood coach Amy Benson. “Sioux City North was able to find a way to even the score on a miscommunication from our defense.  We were able to organize ourselves again to find the back of the net two more times in the first half. “

The Rams’ Ana Frazee and Nikky Schuppan both added goals in the first half as Glenwood led 3-1 at the break.

The second half, Sioux City North was determined to slow the Rams’ attack.

“Sioux City North really packed in on defense in the second half,” Benson said. “It took us a little time to spread their defense out to find the back of the net again.”  

Glenwood’s fourth goal came off an assist from Sara Gutschenritter to Sarah Homan.  Homan received the ball and was able to dribble around two defenders before shooting and scoring. 

Danni Finn added a fifth goal on a nifty cross from the right side of the field to Schuppan, who was on the back post and was able to redirect the ball into the goal, past the keeper.

“I was impressed with our ability to dig deep after Sioux City North evened the score early in the game,” Benson said.  “Our girls never gave up and showed a lot of heart in being able to answer Sioux City North’s goal with four more goals.  It was nice to try a few different people in different positions to work some of the kinks out.  I am definitely pleased with this being our first game of the season.”

The Rams will host Harlan in a match at the Creighton University Soccer Complex Thursday. The match will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the Glenwood varsity boys to immediately follow.
