Glenwood wins fourth straight

Kuemper Catholic nearly rallied from a 21-point deficit, cutting the lead to nine in the fourth quarter, but Glenwood hung on for a 69-54 win in Hawkeye 10 Conference basketball Thursday in Glenwood.

The Rams (9-3 overall, 5-2 in the conference) built the lead to as many as 21 in the third quarter and took a 54-35 lead into the fourth quarter. And that’s when things got “sloppy” according to Glenwood head coach Curt Schulte.

“We needed to focus on shutting the door on them,” he said. “We got a little nonchalant on the defensive end and we didn’t put bodies on guys. We did a really good job (defensively) in the first three quarters but we kind of left the door open for them and had to pull it out shooting some free throws.”

The Knights chipped away at the Rams’ lead, cutting it to nine on Cade Collison’s free throws with 1:53 to go. But Glenwood hit 12-of-14 free throws over the final minutes to pull out the win.

The Rams built their 20-point lead behind a 19-6 second quarter run thanks to its quick transition game. Glenwood assisted on 19 of 23 made field goals.

“I thought our transition was really good tonight, we ran the floor really well. And defensively I thought we played really well for three quarters. Obviously, there’s some things we have to work on but we’re getting better each and every game.”

Zach Carr paced the Rams with 23 points. The senior point guard hit 9-of-11 free throws and dished out seven assists.

Ryan Blum added 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Glenwood 74,
Harlan 67

Ryan Blum and Zach Carr scored 20 points each and Glenwood avenged an earlier loss with a 74-67 win over Class 3A, No. 9 ranked Harlan last Tuesday night.

The Rams (8-3 overall, 4-2 in the Hawkeye 10 conference) trailed 23-16 after a quarter but slowly clawed their way back. They trailed 46-45 heading into the final quarter before out-scoring the Cyclones 29-21 in the final frame to secure the non-conference win.

“I thought this was a great win for us,” Schulte said. “Anytime you can go on the road in the Hawkeye 10, especially up at Harlan, it’s tough. They’re so well coached and disciplined. We just had a fabulous fourth quarter scoring 29 points. This was a great team win for us.”

Glenwood hit a season-high 12 three-pointers and Blum and Carr led four scorers in double-figures with 20 points each. John Palmer and Ben Hughes added 15 points each.

Connor Bruck and Michael Heithoff led Harlan in scoring with 18 points each.
