Glenwood wins Cardinal Relays

CLARINDA - The Glenwood boys track team scored 128 team points to edge Harlan at the Cardinal Relays in Clarinda Friday.

The Rams won four gold medals and finished as runners up in five other events in winning their second straight meet this season despite being short-handed.

“We were without a few varsity people,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “And we put some athletes in different races to see what they could do.  It was a tight team race the majority of the way, but big points in the shot put proved to be the difference. At that point in the night, we knew that we had a large enough lead that we could take home the team title.”

Winning gold for Glenwood was Mavrick Decker (200-meters), Dane Kruse (110-meter high hurdles) and the 4x100-meter and shuttle hurdle relay teams. Kruse stepped up and ran his first ever 400-meters in his high school career to lead off our 4x400 and ran a 52.7.  The Rams’ 4x400 relay team got second, but ran the second fastest clocking of the season without anchor James Fuller, who was out with an illness.  Kruse also anchored the gold medal winning 4x100 and shuttle hurdle relays.

Taking home second place medals were Decker (100-meters), Brogan Weddum (400-meters), Jon Van Scoy (long jump) and the distance medley relay.

Dru Little won third place in the discus with a personal best throw of 131 feet, 6 inches.

Rams
dominate Relays

The Glenwood boys track team ran away from the field to win its eighth consecutive Ram Relays last Tuesday.

The Rams won nine gold medals on a soggy night, racking up 152 team points to easily out-pace runner up Atlantic’s 92 points.

“Despite the cool and damp conditions, we thought we did extremely well across the board,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner. “For the most part, we really competed and got after it.  The kids were pretty motivated in continuing the home winning streak of eight straight years.”

James Fuller had a strong night for the Rams, winning gold in the 200 and 400-meters and running the anchor leg of the gold medal winning 4x400-meter relay.

Also taking home top honors were Mavrick Decker (100-meter dash) and Dane Kruse (110-meter hurdles). The Glenwood relay teams also looked strong taking home golds in the 4x100, 4x200, shuttle hurdle and distance medley relays.

“Sprints and hurdles have been our brightest spots,” Starner said.  “James Fuller, Dane Kruse, Caleb Petersen, Carter Von Essen, Brogan Weddum, Mavrick Decker all had good days, but a lot of kids did well and contributed to several season bests performances.”

The Rams’ 4x400-meter relay won gold in 3:28.70, which was eight seconds better than its season best time.

The 4 x 800-meter relay team placed third but took nine seconds off its best time.

“All four ran well and competed, but was nice to get Andrew Blum in the line up and came up big in his leg in the relay,” Starner said of his 4x800 team.

The shuttle hurdle relay also took three seconds off their best time of the year.

“Things really clicked, but we still have some things we need to work on,” Starner said.  “We still have a touch of the injury and illness bug and we need to get healthy fast so can get back to full strength and put it behind us."
