Glenwood sweeps Hawkeye 10 Southern Division meet titles

RED OAK - The Glenwood girls and boys track teams combined to win 22 gold medals to sweep the team titles at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Southern Division Meet in Red Oak last Tuesday.

The boys won 14 events and easily out-paced runner up Shenandoah 251 to 111 in the team scores. The girls held a 201 to 142 edge over the Fillies in the point standings.

Glenwood boys coach Mark Starner seemed pleased to just be able to compete out on the track finally.

“It was really nice to get outside and while we were still missing some athletes, it was nice to get the kids a chance to compete and get some times on them,” said Starner. “For the most part, we got off to a good start and won a lot of events. Despite the level of competition and the progression of the meet, as a staff, we felt good where we were, but also understand we’ve got to get better in some areas and we know that we will, we’re just not there yet.”

Nate Kennedy cleaned up for the Rams, winning four gold medals. The Rams senior won the 100, 200 and 400-meters in Red Oak and also anchored the gold medal-winning 4x400-meter relay. His 100-meter time ranks in the top 25 in Glenwood history and his 200-meter time was a personal best.

Caleb Sanders led a strong night for the Rams in the field events by picking up a pair of field gold medals in the discus and the shot. Christian Stanislav won gold in the high jump with a personal-best leap of five feet, 10 inches. Zach Vondra won top honors in the long jump.

The Glenwood girls won  eight gold medals highlighted by Emma Hughes’ sweep of the 1,500 and 3,000-meters.
In the relays the Rams won the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, shuttle hurdle and sprint medley relays.

“We had a lot of good performances, including Emma Hughes’ record in the 3000,” said Glenwood girls coach Cory Faust. “If we can get everyone healthy and in great shape, we can be a really tough team to compete against.  There is still a lot of room for improvement, but the attitude and effort from the girls has been really good.”

Also winning gold for the Rams was Elle Scarborough (discus), Audrey Arnold (100-meters) and their 4x100, 4x200, 4x800 and shuttle hurdle relays.
