Glenwood sixth at Hawkeye 10 Conference meet

The Glenwood wrestling team placed in 11 weight classes and finished sixth in the team standings at the Hawkeye 10 Conference wrestling meet Saturday in Red Oak.

Creston topped the conference field with 199.5 points to edge Atlantic’s 188.5 points in the team scoring and win the team title. The title was the Panthers’ sixth in the last nine seasons.

Glenwood medaled in 11 of their 12 weight classes and finished with 156.5 points Saturday.

“The kids wrestled pretty well,” said Glenwood first-year head coach Tucker Weber. “To place in 11 of the 12 weights that means you’re competing and you’re beating guys who probably beat us in duals earlier in the year. We wrestled tough and we look like we’re improving.”

Dalton Book (152) and Noah Clark (285) earned third place medals to lead Glenwood.

Book notched a pin of Red Oak’s Jacob Echternach in the third place finals while Clark also won by pin with a first period fall of Harlan’s Jeremiah Davis.

“He’s a senior and I think he’s realizing his time is limited and he’s starting to come into his own and knocking rust off,” Weber said of Book, who reached the state tournament as a freshman but just missed qualifying the last two seasons. “I keep telling him to keep working and get back there.”

Mitch Mayberry (182), Thaine Williamson (113), Tate Mayberry (138) and Zander Hayes (160) added fourth place finishes for Glenwood.

Abby McIntyre became what is believed to be the first wrestler from any school to place at the Hawkeye 10 Conference meet with a fifth place finish at 132 pounds. McIntyre defeated Kuemper Catholic’s Hayden Stout by medical forfeit in the fifth place finals.

The Rams are back in action hosting the Class 2A Sectional meet Saturday.

Weber feels like he’ll put his best team out on the mat this season at sectionals.

“We keep improving each week, we’re a really young team and I think we’re getting better each and every week, avenging some losses earlier in the year,” he said. “I’m excited for the future. We should be ready to rock and roll Saturday.”

Rams split H-10 triangular

Glenwood split a pair of Hawkeye 10 Conference duals on the road at Denison last Tuesday.

The Rams edged the host Monarchs 39-30 and dropped a 48-36 decision to Kuemper Catholic.

Noah Clark (285 pounds), Thaine Williamson (113), Zander Hayes (160) and Mitch Mayberry (182) all won two matches each.
