Glenwood girls down A.L 1-0
Mia McCorkle’s goal in the eighth minute was all Glenwood needed in a 1-0 victory over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln Thursday.
McCorkle’s goal came on a wild play when a through ball from Kari Schuppan was mishandled and ultimately bobbled away by the Lynx’s goal-keeper. McCorkle didn’t give up on the ball, tracked it down and booted in the score.
The score seemed to settle the Rams and steal back the early momentum and energy the Lynx opened the game with.
“Abraham Lincoln seemed to start with the momentum at the beginning of the game,” said Glenwood coach Amy Benson. “We started to connect some passes and shut down some early chances from AL. We started controlling the game a bit more after the fifth minute and were able to score in the eight hminute. We continued to have more of the control in the first half with a couple more opportunities to score.”
The Ram defense was strong all game long. Goalkeeper Kendall Bardsley stopped all nine shots she saw and the Lynx’s chances was stymied at every angle.
“We came out strong in the second half, but AL started to get more control of the game with about 20 minutes left,” Benson said. “They had some great opportunities at goal and Kendall made some great saves. We then went into more of a defensive shell during the last 10 minutes to try and preserve the lead we had.”
