Glenwood cruises in substate opener

Glenwood started the game hot and never cooled off in a 92-36 victory over A-D-M in their Class 3A, Substate 8 opener Monday in Glenwood.

The Rams (20-2) hit 11 of their first 16 shots and led by as many as 35 points in a the first half that saw them take a 54-21 lead into halftime.

“We shot the ball really well,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte after the game. “And it wasn’t just one or two guys shooting it well, we shot well as a team. I’m not sure what we shot but it had to be pretty good.”

To make matters worse for the Tigers, the Rams opened the second half hitting six straight shots on a 15-0 run and pushed their lead to as many as 52 in the third quarter.

Schulte said his team was well prepared for the Tigers (3-19).

“We’ve had darn near a week to prepare for this team and our J.V. team does a great job in practice in getting our team prepared,” he said. “My hat’s tipped to them. They really did a great job preparing us and I’m really proud of those guys.”

Christian Stanislav led four Rams in double-figures with 18 points. Ryan Blum added 14, Nate Kennedy 13 and Nate Mohr 11.

The Rams now turn their attention to Hawkeye 10 Conference rival Atlantic, who reached the substate semifinals by virtue of a 68-51 win over Denison earlier on Monday. Glenwood will face the Trojans (14-8) Thursday in Glenwood. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the substate finals at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln on Monday.

Glenwood split its two regular-season games with the Trojans.

“Atlantic is playing well and we’ll need to come out and play with that same intensity and energy Thursday night,” Schulte said. “We have to do what we do well and that’s get after it on defense and execute on offense.”
