Glenwood bounces back from first loss with 16-6 road victory

Sydney Biermann and Erin Stanley each smacked home runs for Glenwood in a 16-6 softball victory in five innings at Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson Friday.

The Rams (10-1), just one night after being no-hit in a 10-0 loss to Council Bluffs Lewis Central, were aggressive at the plate all night against the Yellow Jackets (4-4). After scoring five first inning runs, Glenwood added seven more in the fourth in  a game they never trailed in.

“We were more relaxed,” said Glenwood coach Kylee Stanton. “Thursday (against Lewis Central), we came off tense and exhausted. So we came out and the girls were very disciplined and we stayed back and hit the ball and did what we needed to do to get going.”

Brielle Smith and Arianna Springer each added doubles, to go with Biermann and Stanley’s home runs, in the Rams’ 15 hit attack.

“We kept our weight back and produced power when we needed it,” Stanton said.
Biermann, who recorder her team-best fourth home run in the game, picked up the win in the circle. She struck out six and allowed seven hits in the five inning victory.

“Sidney had a long week,” Stanton said. “Considering how many games she’s thrown this week, she threw very, very well. You could tell she was a little physically tired, it’s a lot of wear and tear on a girl to throw five games in one week but she threw pretty well. Once her hitting came on, you could see her confidence come on.”

Ashtyn Miller fired a no-hitter and Council Bluffs Lewis Central handed Glenwood its first loss of the season in a 10-0 Titan victory in Hawkeye 10 Conference softball Thursday in Council Bluffs.

The Rams, who opened the season with nine straight wins, could never get going against Miller. The junior hurler was dominant in the circle, facing just two over the minimum in six innings of work.

“I spoke to their coach after the game and we agreed, this was probably the best nights she’s thrown so far this season,” said Glenwood coach Kylee Stanton. “It was a double-edge sword. You want to see a pitcher who throws well, you just hope you’re more on top of your game that night. And we just weren’t.”

The Titans scored three runs in each of the first two innings and the Rams’ energy began to wane as the game went along.

There was a lot of frustration with the girls,” Stanton said. “Our battery between our pitcher and catcher struggled with things not being called and that got in our heads. We couldn’t get out of our funk.”

Sydney Biermann allowed seven hits and took the loss in the circle.

Sioux City East 5

The Glenwood softball team rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat Sioux City East 6-5 in a thrilling out-of-conference softball tilt in Sioux City last Wednesday.

The Rams trailed 5-0 after two innings but tied the game in the fifth with five runs and then got the game-winner in the seventh.

“We started Taryn (Bertini) and it just seemed like they had her number that night,” said Glenwood coach Kylee Stanton. “It happens. Some pitchers just get picked up. We made some fumbles of our own too. But we took a breath an settled down. Once our girls kind of settled down and Syd (Biermann) came in, we played really well behind her.”

Bertini started in the circle and allowed all five runs before giving way to Sydney Biermann in the third inning. Biermann shut out the Black Raiders the rest of the way.

Sydney Biermann allowed just one run in a complete game win for Glenwood last Tuesday.
Biermann, who improved to 6-0 on the season, scattered seven hits and fanned seven in the complete-game win.

“She had a lot of control that night,” said Glenwood coach Kylee Stanton. “Our bats did their job too. We weren’t over-powers but we got the hits we needed and drew a lot of walks.
Nichole Gilbert, Logan Hughes and Alexis McGinnis all had two hits apiece for the Fillies.
Delanie Voshell allowed just two hits in the circle for the Fillies and struck out 10 but took the loss.

Glenwood 13,
Clarinda 1, 4 innings

Sydney Biermann earned the win in the circle and belted her third home run of the season in a 13-1 Glenwood win over Clarinda in Hawkeye 10 Conference softball last Monday.

Biermann allowed just three hits and one earned run while striking out three in the four-inning victory. At the plate the junior went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and three runs driven in.

Brooklyn Taylor picked up three hits and drove in a run while Brielle Smith and Maddie Liddell each added two hits apiece.

Aziah Smalley took the loss for Shenandoah after surrendering 12 hits and 10 earned runs.
