FM girls win district, send nine to state
The Fremont-Mills girls accumulated 118 points to win the Class 1A District title and qualified in nine events for this week’s Iowa State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines.
The state track and field meet gets underway Thursday in Class 1A and 4A at 9 a.m. The Class 2A and 3A portion begins at 2 p.m.
The Knight girls edged Bedford 118 to 99 in the team standings for the district title. On the boys side, Council Bluffs St. Albert won nine events to win the district crown. The Fremont-Mills boys were second with 98 points.
The Fremont-Mills girls got gold medal performances from Bailey Hauschild in the high jump, Clara Schaaf in the long jump and 400-meter hurdles and Sophie Phillips in the discus. Schaaf and Hauschild were also both a part of the Knights’ 4x100-meter and shuttle hurdle relay teams that won district titles and qualified for state.
Phillips won the discus and teammate Kendra Fichter was second. Philips won the automatic bid to state and Ficther qualified after factoring in her second place toss among all the district results.
The East Mills girls placed fourth at the district meet behind four gold medals by Janette Schraft.
Schraft bested the field in the 800-meters, 1,500-meters, 3,000-meters and along with Madison Williams, Emmy Duysen and Zena Courtier in the distance medley relay.
Courtier also punched her ticket to state in the 400-meter hurdles and Hauschild added a bid in the 100-meter hurdles.
On the boys side, Fremont-Mills got gold medals and automatic state bids from Sam Phillips in the discus, Logan Gaylord in the long jump, Parker Powers in the 110-meter high hurdles and it’s 4x100-meter relay team.
Sam Phillips also qualified in the shot and along with Austin Gartner, Beau Malcom and Powers in the shuttle hurdle relay.
The East Mills boys placed fifth with 62 points.
Matt Glockel won the shot put and was second in the discus to earn a trip to state in both events for the Wolverines. Dylan Schroeder also earned a state bid in the 110-meter high hurdles.
