Child Care Provider Facing Felony Charge

A 25-year-old Glenwood woman has been charged with child endangerment after allegedly causing extensive injuries to a 9-month-old in her care.

Alyce Finn, 25, was charged with child endangerment resulting in serious injury, a Class C felony, June 9. After turning herself in to authorities last Tuesday, Finn was released with a promise to appear in court June 24. Her trial is set for Aug. 26. A Class C felony is punishable by a maximum of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000.

The charge stems from an incident June 3 when Finn summoned Glenwood Fire and Rescue to her home at 910 N. Linn St. after reporting a 9-month-old child had fallen off a couch and suffered a head injury. The child was taken to Children’s Hospital in Omaha and later released to her mother, according to court documents.  But once home the child’s condition worsened and she was returned to the hospital.

Court records indicate the 9-month-old suffered a subdural hematoma and retinal hemorrhaging, both injuries, according to doctors who treated the child, not consistent with a fall.

An investigation was conducted by the Glenwood Police Department.

Mills County Attorney Eric Hansen filed the charge against Finn June 9.

“The baby had injuries not consistent with accidental traumatic brain injuries,” Hansen said. “Doctors have made it clear to us these injuries didn’t happen falling off a couch.”

After eight days in the hospital, the 9-month-old went home last Wednesday.
