Carter, Mayberry medal at Rollin Dyer Invitational
Glenwood’s C.J. Carter and Tate Mayberry won medals at Atlantic’s Rollin Dyer Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday.
Carter placed third in the 170-pound division and Mayberry was fifth at 138 pounds.
Millard South was the team champion at the tournament that featured 34 ranked wrestlers and four ranked teams.
Carter, a freshmen, downed Porter Smith of Bondurant-Farrar 16-0 in technical fall to earn his medal in the third place match.
“He lost his first match and battled back,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “He lost to a tough Red Oak kid he hadn’t seen before who ended up getting second. C.J. was right there with him. He’s a kid he’ll have to beat to get out of sectionals.”
Mayberry, who went 2-2 on the day, defeated Atlantic’s Brian South in overtime with a 15-13 sudden victory.
“He went into overtime (in the fifth place match) and got a pin in his other win but I thought he wrestled hard,” Weber said. “He’s young and he’s a kid improving each week.”
Dalton Book added a seventh place medal with a first period pin of Red Oak’s Jacob Echternach. Also earning eighth place medals for Glenwood were Sully Woods (195 pounds), Zander Hayes (160) and Tyler Boldra (145),
“We wrestled hard and got some young kids in,” Weber said. “Millard South got in the tournament late so that made it a lot tougher tournament. There were some good kids and real good teams there. We didn’t have a full lineup with some kids staying home but I felt like we wrestled pretty well with the kids we had out there.”
Rams 1-2 at
Shenandoah quad
The Glenwood wrestling went 1-2 in a Hawkeye 10 Conference quadrangular Thursday in Shenandoah.
The Rams notched a 60-12 victory over Shenandoah and dropped duals to Council Bluffs Lewis Central 51-24 and Red Oak 48-30.
“We had some kids out of the lineup and trying to get healthy, that’s more important for us right now than throwing them out there,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “We’re tying to get healthy but we’re competing. We’re not where we want them to be but they’re improving every week. It’s time to sharpen up the tools this time of year.”
Glenwood’s Tate Mayberry went 3-0 on the night and Thaine Williamson and Jacob Radford each won both of their matches.
