Rams go on road for district win at Denison

Glenwood’s Myles Stanton came on in relief of starter Ryan Turner and did not allow a hit in 1 2/3 scoreless innings in the Rams’ win over Denison.
Glenwood survived a four hour rain delay and Denison’s comeback attempts in a 5-2 victory in in the Class 3A, Substate 1 opening round Thursday in Denison.
The Rams built a slim 3-2 lead through 6 1/3 innings behind a strong pitching performance by Ryan Turner – three hits, two earned runs and four strikeout – before the rains suspended play.
“We had done pretty good offensively and then we kind of settled down,” said Glenwood coach Dave Clark. “We ran ourselves out of a few innings. We probably could’ve had two or three more runs, had we not run ourselves out, but ultimately we ended up sitting in a rain delay which lasted until 7 (p.m.) for the restart which was just absolutely crazy. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation like that, but you know obviously both coaches want to win for their seniors in that situation.”
When play resumed, Myles Stanton took over and, after walking the first batter he faced, shut the Monarchs down. Stanton did not allow a hit in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Rams tacked on two runs insurance runs in the seventh.
Denison did have the tying run come to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but Stanton induced a popout to right field to end the game.
“It was a huge win for us, and I tip my hat Denison,” Clark said. “They had a great season and they’re a good team that beat us really bad the first two times they played us, so you know they have a good team. But I have said all year as long, if we have Ryan on the mound, I think we can pretty much play against anybody.”
Charlie Hutchcraft led the Rams (12-20 overall, 8-12 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) with three hits and two runs driven in.
Brennan Anderson and Grahm Newberry each notched two hits and drove in runs
With the win, Glenwood advanced to face Bishop Heelan (27-10) in the Class 3A, Substate 1 semifinals at Lewis and Clark Park in Sioux City. Full coverage of that game will appear in the next edition of The Opinion-Tribune.
