Glenwood’s Lundvall, Rivas punch tickets to state meet

Emily Lundvall and Maya Rivas made history Friday.

The Glenwood duo became the first two Glenwood wrestlers to punch tickets to the first ever Girls State Wrestling Tournament this week in Coralville.

At Friday’s Region 1 Wrestling Tournament in Sioux City, Lundvall pinned here way through the bracket to win the 120-pound bracket. Rivas placed third at 135-pounds. The top four finishers qualify for state in each weight bracket.

The girls state wrestling tournament opens Thursday at the Xtream Arena in Coralville.

Lundvall, who was the only wrestling with experience returning for Glenwood this season, pinned MNW’s Ally Reuter in :54 to earn a spot in the finals. The junior then pinned Sioux Center’s Cora Schut in third period of the championship match to win her bracket.

“She had all pins and she’s excited to be our first state qualifier in school history,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. “She’s had a good year. She had a little slump a few weeks ago but she battled back hard.”

The 120-pound, No. 12 seeded Lundvall (24-6) will face Creston junior Odessa Nibbelink (26-16) in her state opener.

Rivas was pinned by DESC’s Angie Rivera in the semifinals but bounced back to place third.

“She was dominated in her first match to get to the semifinals and she battled back to get third,” Weber said. “She’s just a freshman. Hopefully she sticks with it.”

Rivas (15-11), seeded No. 28 at 135, opens state against CHCI senior Elizabet Oleson (24-8).

State tournament matches begin Thursday at 9 a.m.

Rams split at Denison
The Glenwood girls wrestling team split a pair of Hawkeye 10 Conference duals at Denison last Tuesday.
The Rams’ Emily Lundvall (120 pounds), Lauralyse Flint-Spencer (130) and Audrina Johansen (110) all went 2-0 on the night.
