Big sixth inning lifts AL over Glenwood

Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln hung 10 runs on Glenwood in a big sixth inning rally to notch a 17-13 victory over the Rams in out-of-conference softball Friday in Council Bluffs.

The Rams (2-17) led 11-7 after five innings before the Lyxn exploded for in the sixth innings for 10 runs. Glenwood answered with two runs in the seventh but could not narrow the margin any further.

The two teams combined for 26 hits in the game but also nine fielding errors. Glenwood also gave the Lynx 22 walks between the two games.

“The walks that game don’t do us any favors,” said Glenwood coach Ellie Roenfeld. “When bases are loaded with zero or one out often, the defense can only do so much. We should be able to win a game scoring 13 runs.” 

Adelynn Thiesen and Emma Johansen notched three hits each to lead the Rams. Johansen tripled and drove in four runs and Malynn Johnson and Audrey Albers each had two hits and drove in three runs apiece.

Ryan Reckinger took the loss in the circle after allowing 11 hits and 16 earned runs while walking 16.

The Lynx’s Kynzie Moyer allowed 17 hits and nine earned runs while fanning three to pick up the win.

Madison Beckman doubled and drove in three runs for Abraham Lincoln. 

Rams fall twice at Creston

Creston pounded 17 hits combined in a pair of victories over Glenwood in Hawkeye 10 Conference softball Thursday in Creston.

The Panthers (10-10) won game one 12-2 and then topped the Rams 12-3 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Kennedy Strider pitched five innings, scattering two hits and striking out eight while going 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs.

Adelynn Thiesen tripled and Malynn Johnson drove in a run for the Rams in opener.

In game two, Panthers pitcher Jensan Tussey and Kennedy Strider combined to scattered six hits and three earned runs in the five-inning victory.

“Josie (Kenkel) is healing up still,” said Glenwood coach Ellie Roenfeld. “We’re seeing the ball better, but we haven’t put a whole game together. We’ve had games with good offense but struggle defensively. Then other days we’ve had good defense but struggle offensively. Finding our way to put it all together. Creston is a solid team and outplayed us.”

With regular starting pitcher Josie Kenkel still recovering from an injury, freshman Ryan Reckinger started both games for the Rams in the circle. The freshman allowed six hits and nine earned runs while walking 12 in game one and in the nightcap, she scattered nine hits and 10 earned runs.

Emma Johansen, Malynn Johnson, Audrey Albers, Allie Neuhalfen and Aubree Faust each had hits in the second game. Neuhalfen drove in two runs.

Glenwood 16,

Red Oak 0

An eight-run second inning and two-hit shutout from pitcher Ryan Reckinger propelled Glenwood to a 16-0 win over Red Oak in Hawkeye 10 Conference softball last Tuesday.

The Rams plated two runs in the first and then blew the game open with an eight run second inning on their way to win.

 “The girls are having better at-bats and stepping into new roles on the field and team,” said Glenwood coach Ellie Roenfeld. “Reckinger did well last night, and will have opportunities in the future.”

Reckinger allowed two hits, walked one and struck out two in the four-inning victory.

Emma Johansen had three hits and drove in three runs to lead Glenwood at the plate. Adelynn Thiesen drove in a run and Aubree Faust two.

Lilly Cooper took the loss for the Tigers. The eighth grader scattered 10 hits, walked five and hit four batters while striking out three.

Emma Wingert and Kaylee Erickson had the hits for Red Oak.

“Tough outing all around for the Tigers tonight,” said Red Oak coach Alec Ruskell. “We made adjustments at the plate late in the fourth just a little too late. We got away from the fundamentals on defense and made more errors than the sound defense we have played for the most part this year. The girls are determined and won’t let a bad outing define them as we look to bounce back against a tough Clarinda team the next two nights.”

Rams drop two to St. Albert

Council Bluffs St. Albert swept Glenwood 10-3 and 16-5 in a Hawkeye 10 Conference softball double-header in Glenwood last Monday.

The Saintes (10-9) combined to collect 27 hits in the two victories.

In game one, St. Albert’s Ella Narmi held the Rams scoreless through five innings while scattering three hits and striking out 13 in the complete-game win.

Josie Kenkel took the opening game loss for the Rams. Kenkel gave up nine hits and three earned runs while striking out six. Emma Johansen, Malynn Johnson and BellaMarie Joslin each notched hits in the opener.

In the nightcap, Ryan Reckinger made her first start this season, allowing 16 hits and 15 earned runs in the loss. 

Malynn Johnson and Aubree Faust had two hits each for Glenwood in the second game.
