Rams suffer first loss on pitch

The No. 14 ranked Glenwood girls soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday with a 2-0 setback against Sioux City East.

The Rams (4-1 overall, 3-0 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) struggled to adjust to the Black Raiders’ offensive scheme in the loss.

“Sioux City East played a formation that we were not used to seeing,” said Glenwood coach Amy Benson.  They did a really good job of using their outside defenders as an extra option on offense.”

Sioux City East got on the board in the first half when Kylee Goodvin found the back of the net off an assist from Brooklyn Malchow.

Down 1-0 and hoping to put their first half struggles behind them, Benson sent her team out after halftime with a few adjustments.

“We had a hard time finding offensive opportunities during the first half and mostly played defense,” Benson said. “We decided to adjust and play a different formation in the second half.  The adjustment helped and we were able to have more offensive opportunities.”

But the Rams, playing their fourth game in five days, couldn’t capitalize on their chances. The Black Raiders’ Sam Anderson scored an insurance goal in the 54th minute off another assist from Malchow to seal the win.

Glenwood finished with four shots on goal East’s 15.

Alicia Leu had a hat trick and seven different player scored at least one goal for Glenwood in a 10-0 rout of Harlan in Hawkeye 10 Conference girls soccer in a match played at the Creighton University Soccer Complex.

The Rams (4-0, 3-0 in the conference) scored the first of their goals on an unassisted shot by Leu just six minutes into the match. Leu added another goal of a Sarah Homan assist less than a minute later.

With 14 minutes gone in the match, the Rams led 4-0.

“The girls played really well together tonight,” said Glenwood coach Amy Benson. “We were making the right passes and runs.  Everything was working in our favor.  We were doing an awesome job of communicating and controlling the flow of the game.  We are playing well together and starting to hit our stride.”

Homan, Sara Gutschenritter, Leu and Dani Finn each added goals in the first half as Glenwood took a commanding 7-0 lead into the break.

Goals by Taylor Bardsley, Ana Frazee and Nikki Schuppan wrapped up the scoring and the game as the Rams ended it 10-0 according to the “mercy rule” with just over 20 minutes to play in the second half.

Glenwood 8,
Denison 0
A renewed emphasis on communication and passing netted Glenwood a season-high in goals and shots-on-goal in an 8-0 victory over Denison in Hawkeye 10 Conference girls soccer last Tuesday.
The Rams (3-0 overall, 1-0 in the conference) recorded 38 shots-on-goal in the win.

“The girls passed the ball really well tonight,” said Glenwood coach Amy Benson.  “We also had great communication. We worked on trying to spread the defense to attack their openings.  The girls are really starting to work well together and many different players found the back of the net.”

Taylor Bardsley got the Rams on the board early, scoring off an assist from Sarah Homan in the seventh minute. Homan would follow up with three first half goals of her own as Glenwood led 4-0 at the break.

Bardsley once again, Jenna Becker, Danni Finn and Ana Frazee would add goals in the second half.

Goalkeeper Rileigh Spahn recorded her second straight shutout.

Glenwood 1,
C.B. Thomas Jefferson 0

Sarah Homan’s penalty kick goal in the 48th minute lifted Glenwood to a 1-0 victory in girls non-conference soccer last Monday at City Field in Council Bluffs.

A tough defensive effort by both squads left neither team with much offense through the first half. But the Rams had their chances throughout the game, Glenwood Coach Amy Benson said.

“We had a lot of opportunities to score in this game,” said Glenwood coach Amy Benson.  “We possessed the ball well in both halves and Thomas Jefferson did a great job of collapsing on defense.  We had more opportunities on goal when we were able to spread out their defense.  We just had trouble capitalizing to score a goal.  Luckily, in the second half we caught our break.”

The Rams’ break came in the form of whistle by an official Ram forward Taylor Bardsley was shove inside the Yellowjackets box. Homan lined up for the kick and booted the game-winner into the left corner.

Rams’ goalkeeper Rileigh Spahn recorded 14 saves to go along with her first shutout of the season.
