Rams earn one medal on opening day at state track

Emma Hughes' sixth place finish in the 3,000 meters provided the lone points for the Glenwood girls and boys track teams on a rainy opening day at the Iowa State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines today.

After day one in 3A competition, the Pella boys lead Adel-DeSoto-Minburn 21.5 to 20 in the early team standings. On the girls side, Ballard scored 19 points, three points more than second place Charles City, heading into day two.

Running on the blue oval of Drake Stadium for the first time in over 700 Days, the Rams’ Hughes ran a 10:41.01 to finish sixth. Teammate, and fellow senior, Erin Schultz was 20th with a time of 11:36.37.

The Glenwood girls would go on to place 15th in the 4x800-meter relay while Coryl Matheny finished 16th in the high jump.

The Ram boys didn’t medal on day one but saw Silas Bales pick up a pair of top 15 finishes in the 200 (12th) and the 400 (14th).

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Zander Hayes, Anthony Driscoll-Lee, Grant Von Essen and Tyler Boldra finish 12th in a season-best time of 1:03.58 but did not advance to Saturday’s finals.

Kord Ostrander and Cody Krause placed 13th and 16th respectively in the high jump while Brock Sell was 24th in the 100-meters.

The Rams are back in action in nine events Friday with Class 3A action beginning at 9 a.m.
