County puts the brakes on backing for Glen Haven Village loan

Following the advice of Assistant Mills County Attorney Tyler Loontjer, the Mills County Board of Supervisors has rescinded its commitment for an assured income loan guarantee agreement for the proposed Glen Haven Village project.

The action of the supervisors puts the future of the proposed skilled-care facility in doubt, although all three members of the county board expressed a desire to move forward with the assured income guarantee if questions and concerns over the legality of the agreement are answered.

East Mills’ Schraft headed to state in four events

East Mills Janette Schraft and Fremont-Mills’ Clara Schaaf both punched their tickets to state in four events each at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Tabor Thursday.

Schraft, a junior, won the 800-meters, 1,500-meters and the 400-meter hurdles but had to wait until Friday to learn her time of 11:05.58 in the 3,000-meters was good enough among those not securing automatic bids. Bedford’s Emma Lucas won the automatic berth with a time of 10:44.78.

New Lincoln Farm & Home store shines bright at I-29/H-34 interchange

The new Lincoln Farm & Home BP store is up and running.

Local civic leaders and economic development officials joined the Lincoln family in officially opening their new store at 18880 Hyland Ave.  during an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, May 8.

“It’s been kind of a long time in the planning process, but we’re finally open out here,” Nate Lincoln said. “We’re excited to be open.”

Colton Book’s round of 77 was a bright spot for a Glenwood team that came up two agonizing strokes short of a top two finish at Friday’s Class 3A sectional at the Majestic Hills Country Club in Denison.

The Rams shot a team round of 325 to come up just short of second place A-D-M’s 323. Atlantic was the sectional champion with a round of 309. The top two teams and five individual scores advance to this week’s district meet with a shot at state on the line.

F-Mills, Stanton announce hiring of superintendent

The Fremont-Mills and Stanton Community School Districts have announced the appointment of David Gute as their shared superintendent.

Gute will assume his new duties July 1, replacing Dr. Christopher Herrick, who is retiring on June 30 after serving the Fremont-Mills Community School District for 18 years.

Gute is currently serving as the 7th - 12th grade principal for the Riverside Community School District in Oakland, a position he’s held for the past nine years.

The East Mills junior, didn’t accomplish her goal of winning four gold medals at the Iowa State Track and Field Championships this weekend – she won three – but she did achieve something perhaps just as impressive.
Schraft placed second. As a team. All by herself.

Vendors praise move of Farmers Market to Town Square

Based on first impressions, the relocation of Glenwood’s Wednesday farmers market from Glenwood Lake Park to Town Square is going to be a big hit with vendors and patrons.

Lack of interest from eligible employees forces school district to nix early retirement incentive

There will be no early retirement incentive offered this year to eligible Glenwood Community School District teachers and staff.

The Glenwood Board of Directors voted unanimously at its meeting last Monday to void its stated plan to offer incentive bonuses to staff who are considering retirement and are over age 55 with 15 years of continued service in the district.

Rams sending 24 to state track

The Glenwood girls and boys each won the district title and combined to qualify in 24 events for this week’s Iowa State Track Meet.

At the Class 3A State Qualifying Meet in Atlantic in Thursday, the Glenwood girls won the district title with 173 points to easily out distance runner up ADM’s 121 points. The girls qualified in a school-record 14 events at the meet.
The Glenwood boys punched 10 tickets to state of their own while winning the district title over the host Trojans 160 to 151 in the team standings.
