  • GCHS Teacher Awarded $20,000 Technology Prize

    A unique undertaking by her environmental science class students has earned a Glenwood Community High School teacher statewide recognition and her school $20,000 in technology.

    Betsy Maryott is one of five winners from Iowa in the 2014 Samsung Solve For Tomorrow contest, a national competition created to promote innovative ways to teach science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As a state winner in the contest, Maryott and GCHS automatically become eligible to compete for a larger technology prize of $35,000-$140,000.

  • Rams pull away in second half for victory

    Halie Darrow and Bailey Starner combined for 29 points and Glenwood out-scored Creston 33-15 in the second half of a 58-35 Hawkeye 10 Conference girls basketball victory Friday.

    After opening the game in man-to-man defense and watching sophomore center Jenna Taylor give the Rams’ trouble inside, Glenwood coach Barry Loeffelbein went to a compact 2-3 zone in the second half that forced the Panthers to  a primarily perimeter game.

  • Glenwood wrestlers earn pair of dual wins

    The Glenwood wrestling team opened its season with a sweep of Council Bluffs St. Albert and Kuemper Catholic in Council Bluffs Thursday.

    The Rams dispatched Kuemper 63-9, winning seven matches by pin. Against the home Falcons, Glenwood won eight matches by forfeit and two by pin.

    Nate Phillips, Collin Ransom, Drayton Slaughter, Nate Nebel, Hunter Ackerson, A.J. Slaughter, Cole Peckham, Matt Malcom, Derek Warren, Jon Stavas, Sterling Stouder and Zach Haggstrom all recorded two wins in the double dual. Ransom and Peckham each recorded two pins.

  • Passing the Torch

    For Gary Giaffoglione it was something he’d long hoped for.

    For Gina Giaffoglione it was a day she hoped would never come.

    Gary, a longtime tumbling and acrobatics coach, is stepping down from running the day-to-day operations of the business he opened 22-years ago, and handing the reigns over to one of his first pupils, his daughter Gina.

  • Creston tops Glenwood in overtime, 62-53

    A Glenwood basket with 27 seconds left sent the game into overtime before Creston out-scored the Rams 16-7 in the extra frame to pull out a 62-53 Hawkeye 10 Conference win at home on Friday.

    After trading leads most of the second half, Glenwood (0-2) found itself down 46-44 with 27 seconds to go when 6-foot-7 Jacob Lewis laid in a basket to tie it and send the game into overtime.

  • Nebraska Man Facing Child Sex Abuse Charges

    A Bellevue, Neb., man is facing charges of performing sexual acts with two girls, ages 7 and 8, in Mills County and Sarpy County, Neb.

    Johh Schondelmeyer, 64, was charged with two counts of second-degree sexual abuse and two counts of lascivious acts with a child.

  • Man With Gun Arrested Near Middle School

     

    A 66-year-old Glenwood man, armed with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun, was arrested without incident Monday afternoon, Dec. 2, near the Glenwood Middle School.
