Investigators Still Seeking Leads In 2024 Race Track Shooting

There have yet to be any arrests made in connection to a deadly shooting that took place more than a year ago at the I-29 Speedway in western Mills County.
“It’s still an open, on-going investigation,” said Special Agent Darrell Simmons of the Iowa Division Of Criminal Investigation. “We’re still needing the public’s assistance. If there’s anyone out there who saw or witnessed anything, we’d love to have them come forward.”
Marcus L. Johnson, 28, and Charles A. Williams, 27, both of Omaha, were killed in the incident that took place the night of Aug. 10, 2024, outside the motorsports racing track near Pacific Junction. A hip-hop concert was taking place at the time of the shooting. The concert was the culmination of a day-long schedule of events at the venue, including a car show, comedy show and drag racing.
Although law enforcement agencies didn’t release details regarding the shooting, a Facebook post from the general manager of the I-29 Speedway stated, “The 2 victims were just walking towards the concert entrance when a vehicle drove up to them and the vehicle occupants shot the victims from inside of the vehicle, they then drove out of the facility. There were no words exchanged, no arguments, and no warning.”
“There were deputies within 20 feet of the shooting and the criminals did not care.”
Simmons said the DCI has continued working extensively with the Mills County Sheriff’s Office and Omaha Police Department in the investigation of the incident, noting law enforcement agencies continue to receive occasional tips regarding the incident.
The Omaha Police Department is offering a $25,000 cash reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
