Glenwood School Board Election Has 5 Candidates Competing For 2 Seats

School board and city office seats will be on the Nov. 7 election ballot.

Five candidates will be on the ballot for two seats on the Glenwood Board of Education in the Nov. 7 general election.

Kellie Stewart, Eva Krueger, William Painter, William Bruce Wray and Tony Winton are vying for the two seats currently occupied by Krueger and Curt Becker, who is not seeking re-election.

Three seats are up for election in the East Mills County Community School District. Mark Stearns and Trent Jones are unopposed for the District 1 and District 2 seats, while Suzanne Schraft, Nicole Marie Semrau and Dana Carter are competing for one at-large seat.

Mayoral and city council seats are also on the general election ballot.

In Glenwood, incumbent mayor Ron Kohn is unopposed in his re-election bid. No candidates are on the ballot for the Ward 1 city council seat, currently held by Jeremy Rodman. Write-in votes will likely determine the next occupant of that seat. Also in Glenwood, Ward 2 councilman Donnie Kates is unopposed and Christina Duran is the lone candidate for the at-large seat occupied currently by Dan McComb, who is not seeking re-election.

Pacific Junction Mayor Andy Young has no challengers for his position while Terry Lynn Parham, Len Nieland and Dianna Irick are running for city council where five at-large seats must be filled.

Sharon McNutt is the lone mayoral candidate in Silver City. Lynda Thomas, Brett Christensen, Ron Damewood, Rose Mary Schoening and Susan McPeck are in competition for three seats on the city council in Silver City.

Douglas Shere is running for mayor in Malvern, while Roger Allen Johnson and Bryant Rasmussen are running for city council. Three city council seats are up for election in Malvern.

Hastings has no candidates on the ballot for mayor and only one candidate, Eva Hall, for five city council seats up for election.

Special Measures On Ballot

In addition to the school board and municipal elections, voters will also be asked to decide the fate of the following measures:

City Of Glenwood – A 7% percent hotel/motel lodging tax, nearly identical to the tax passed earlier this year for unincorporated areas of Mills County. The tax would be imposed on persons paying for a hotel/motel or airbnb stays within the city limits.

Glenwood Community School District - $39.9 million bond issue for renovations and expansion at Northeast Elementary School, HVAC and lighting improvements at the Glenwood Middle School and the establishment of “Inventionland” innovation labs and classrooms at Northeast and West Elementary Schools.

East Mills Community School District – A renewal of the district’s 10-year Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) not to exceed $1.34 per $1,000 taxable valuation is on the ballot. Funds generated by the PPEL would be used for infrastructure improvements and maintenance, transportation and technology expenses.

Lewis Central Community School District – Mills County residents living in the Lewis Central Community School district will help determine the fate of a $90 million general obligation bond. Funds would pay for large infrastructure repairs, construction of a new elementary school and early childhood facility and an addition and renovations at the middle school.

Early in-person and absentee voting begins Oct. 18, which is also the first day the Mills County Auditor’s Office can send out absentee ballots.

Polling sites in Mills County will be open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Additional information about the November general election is available from the Mills County Auditor’s Office.
