• Shopko Management Mum On Future Of Glenwood Store

    Hy-Vee is acquiring the Shopko Pharmacy in Glenwood, but management from Wisconsin-based Shopko has declined to answer questions concerning the future of the Shopko Hometown store in Glenwood.

    On Friday, HyVee announced the acquisition of 22 Shopko pharmacies in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin, including the Shopko Pharmacy in Glenwood.

  • Welcome Newcomers Mills County

    The desire to spread the word about a community she considers to be “one of the best kept secrets in Iowa,” is the inspiration behind Anne Smith’s decision to bring back a newcomers welcome program to the Glenwood area.

    The community has been void of a welcome service for new residents since late 2011 when Suzanne Tuma retired from operating her Glenwood Newcomers business. Smith, who retired last year from a 22-year career with the Mills County Public Health Office, said she’s looking forward to her new venture.

  • Glenwood Family Dentistry Moves To New Location

    The staff at Glenwood Family Dentistry is settling in at its new location – the former Glenwood City Hall building at 107 S. Locust St.

    Glenwood Family Dentistry, owned and operated by Dr. Paul Albertson, was started in the early 1970s by Dr. Dennis Gray who retired five years ago. The practice was previously housed at 514 First St.

    “The other building was over 100 years old and had been kind of cobbled together,” Dr. Albertson said. “It wasn’t designed to be a dental office, so we always had to retrofit things to get it to work.

    The Anytime Fitness club in Glenwood has undergone a major renovation over the last few months and will showcase its new look with a grand re-opening celebration on Thursday, Dec. 11.

  • New Hardware Store Helps Fill Void

    Glenwood-area residents once again have a local hardware store to go to for those fix-it-up and lawn and garden projects around the house.

    Garden Treasures Home and Hardware, located just south of the city limits at 22309 221 St., opened for business Tuesday, April 1. The store is an affiliate of the nationally-known Hardware Hank line of products.

    Employees at a Glenwood insurance agency are getting settled at their spacious new location. In July, Accurate Insurance relocated its offices from the north side of Town Square to a new building at 508 S. Locust St.

  • Opinion-Tribune Staffers Recognized

    Two staff members from The Opinion-Tribune newspaper have been recognized with journalism awards from the Omaha Press Club and Landmark Community Newspapers for work published during the 2010 calendar year.

        Editor Joe Foreman and associate editor Joel Stevens were named winners of four awards earlier this month in the Omaha Press Club’s annual “Excellence In Journalism Competition.” They received three first-place awards and one second place award from the OPC.

    Beginning Saturday, Feb. 26, residents of southwest Iowa - including Glenwood, Mineola, Silver City, Council Bluffs and four other communities that enjoy having unlimited local calling to the Omaha metro area - will have to dial the three-digit area code plus the seven-digit telephone number to complete their call.

  • Winery Coming To Glenwood

    If you’re going to open a winery in Glenwood, it seems appropriate to locate on Vine Street.

        That’s exactly what Jim Gapinski, Ralph Ahsam, Doug Grave and Dennis Adams are doing. Next spring, the four entrepreneurs plan to open the Vine Street Cellars winery in  the former Anderson Auto Parts building at 17 N. Vine St.

  • Ready-Mix Rebuild

    Cohron Ready Mix plant has competed a $1.5 million “ground up” re-build of its Glenwood plant.

    The Glenwood plant, located along Vine Street and Railroad Avenue, opened in 1972. This is the first major overhaul at the plant since that original opening, said Steve McCracken, general manager of Cohron Ready Mix.

    “It's a completely new facility,” said McCracken.
