Bank Robbery Attempt Thwarted In Glenwood
A 66-year-old Glenwood resident was arrested last Wednesday after law enforcement officers responded to a bank robbery call at Glenwood State Bank. The attempted robbery was reported around 9:50 a.m.
Ricky Schnackel is facing charges of second-degree robbery, a Class B felony, and use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime, an aggravated misdemeanor, after being arrested outside the bank by Glenwood police officers.
According to a complaint on file with the Mills County Clerk Of Court’s office, Schnackel approached a teller at the bank with a knife in his hand and the blade extended. The teller said Schnackel told her he needed money and instructed her to give him money. The teller messaged her supervisor to inform her that the male at the counter had a knife in his hand. The supervisor immediately called 911 and then walked by the man and saw the knife in his hand. The supervisor then notified bank officer Grant Dean of the situation.
Dean approached Schnackel and asked him what he was doing. With the knife displayed, Schnackel told Dean it was a robbery. Dean proceeded to escort Schnackel out of the building where he was immediately arrested by police officers who had just arrived on the scene.
According to state district court records, last week’s incident marks the second time Schnackel has been charged with displaying a weapon while attempting to rob a bank. In 2016, Schnackel was arrested after he attempted to rob a drive-through teller at a bank in Creston with a BB gun. He was initially charged with first-degree robbery but later pleaded guilty to a felony charge of intimidation with a dangerous weapon with intent to injure or provoke fear. His prison sentence was suspended to three years probation and 90 hours of community service over the probationary period.
