Keg Creek Brewing Company's Old Marathon Beer Awarded Bronze Medal At Great American Beer Festival

For the second time in less than a year, Keg Creek Brewing has earned a medal in a national brewing competition.
Earlier this month, the Glenwood brewery earned a bronze medal at the 2021 Great American Beer Festival in Denver. Keg Creek’s Old Marathon barleywine style ale was awarded a bronze medal in the Barrel Aged Strong Beer category.

“It’s really a good beer and nice honor,” Keg Creek Brewing Co. president Randy Romens said.

Mitch John, head brewer at Keg Creek, said time-blending and the overall quality of the beer is what makes Old Marathon so special.

“It goes into multiple barrels and then we blend those together into one unified beer,” John said. “Out of eight barrels, we pick the best three and blend those together.”

John is in charge of producing Keg Creek’s beers along with assistant brewers Chase Brumm and Trent Watson.
In 2020, Old Marathon was also a bronze medal winner at the U.S. Open Beer Championship in the Barrel Aged Barlywine category. Additionally, Keg Creek earned a bronze medal at 2020 U.S. Open in the Rum Barrel Aged competition for its Deviant Of The Depths beer.

At this month’s Great American Beer Festival, Old Marathon was among more than 150 entries in the Barrel Aged Strong Beer category. The competition, sponsored by the Brewers Association, included competition in 97 categories covering 175 different beer styles. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in each category.

Keg Creek Brewing was one of six Iowa breweries to medal at the festival, along with Lion Bridge Brewing of Cedar Rapids, Marto Brewing Co. of Sioux City, Peace Tree Brewing of Knoxville, PIVO Brewery of Calmar and SingleSpeed Brewing of Waterloo.

The bronze medal gives Keg Creek one more reason to celebrate this month. The brewery is observing its 10th anniversary in 2021. Romens said a special event is being planned for mid-October to celebrate the milestone occasion.
