Heartland Christian downs East Mills girls, 54-46

    Both Molly Cunard and sister Steffi Cunard combined to score 49 of Heartland Christian’s 54 points in a 54-46 victory over the East Mills girls on Friday.

    Molly Cunard recorded 27 points and Steffi Cunard added 22 points.
    It was a very close game throughout, and our largest deficit was the final margin,” said East Mills coach Jeff Laughlin. “The Cunard sisters are very talented, and may be the best shooters in the 
entire conference. We tried to triangle them and it worked well at times, but they were still able to get their shots and knock them down, even with a hand in their face.”
    East Mills shot just 24.6 percent from the field (17-of-69), including 7-of-31 on three’s.
    We missed several easy put-back baskets that kept us from being able to open up a lead,” Laughlin said. “We shot the ball well at times from the perimeter and were able to get out and run on occasion, but we just weren’t able to force as many turnovers as we needed to.”
    Devin Laughlin led the Wolverines with 23 points.
    “Devin played well and was aggressive all night, but we just needed someone else to step up and hit the open shot,” Coach Laughlin said. “There was a 11-2 foul discrepancy in the second half, and we didn’t shoot any second half free-throws! I thought that was a big difference in the game, especially as well as they shoot free-throws. Our girls battled all night. Now we just have to find a way to win these games.

    The Fremont-Mills girls out-scored East Mills 38-22 over the final three quarters in a 51-34 victory in Corner Conference play on Friday.
    “It was a hard fought game throughout and we still had a chance to win until the fourth quarter,” said East Mills coach Jeff Laughlin. “We had our worst rebounding performance of the season and that is what really hurt us. Not only did we allow them to get second chance opportunities, but sometimes we gave them four or five chances.
    We have to do a better job of rebounding when we are able to force them to miss as many shots as they did tonight.”
    Offensively, the Wolverines were able to get open looks most of night, but struggled again with our shooting, finishing 13-of-51 from the field (25.4 percent). Katie Sowers was able to keep East Mills in the game from the perimeter with her team-high 16 but the Wolverines just couldn’t get enough stops to get over the hump.
    “Defensively, I thought that we played very well especially considering how many minutes some of the girls played man to man,” Laughlin said. “Fremont Mills is a very talented team and has the potential to accomplish great things, but I really think that the gap between them and us isn’t as big as people may think.”
