Cyclones roll through Glenwood
Top ranked Harlan’s started each half strong and pulled away from Glenwood in a 68-33 Hawkeye 10 Conference girls basketball victory Friday in Glenwood.
Harlan (18-0 overall, 10-0) led 8-5 after three minutes and then went on a 12-3 run to go ahead 20-8 after one quarter. Glenwood (9-10 overall, 4-6 in the conference) would hang in until the final few seconds of the half when Harlan scored five straight to push the lead to 38-22 at the break.
The Cyclones girls came out of the locker room hot, out-scoring Glenwood 21-7 in the third quarter.
Jordan Moser led five Harlan players in double figures with 14.
Glenwood was led by Jana King’s 13 points.
Glenwood 50,
Creston 49
In a back-and-forth game, Glenwood built a four-point fourth quarter and needed everyone of those points in a 50-49 girls basketball victory over Creston last Tuesday.
“It was a battle all the way. They’re down a couple of girls but they’re still a pretty good team,” said Glenwood coach Barry Loeffelbein of Creston, who beat the Rams 62-45 back on Dec. 5.
This time around, the Rams (9-9 overall, 4-6 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) never let the Panthers pull away. Neither team led by more than three points through most of three quarters. Late into the third and into the fourth quarter, Glenwood seemed to take control on both ends of the court.
“We made a few shots and moved the ball well offensively and we got good looks at the basket and knocked them down,” Loeffelbein said.
Loeffelbein’s team built a narrow four point lead late in the fourth, but more importantly, got the momentum with their defense.
“We got a little cushion (in the fourth quarter) and turned out we needed all of it down the stretch. I think defensively we played good for the most part; we didn’t get out on some shooters. Jenna Taylor is a good player. We did a good job on her for the most part but she got loose too much.”
Taylor finished with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds.
Jana King and Danika Patrick each scored 17 to lead Glenwood.
“Jana did a good job playing in and out. She hit just one three but she did a great job in and around the high post. And Danika hit some big baskets around the basket down the stretch,” Loeffelbein said.
