Rachel Tucker and Grace Newman dropped their opening round doubles match in the Iowa State Tennis Tournament at Byrnes Park in Waterloo on Thursday.
Tucker and Newman lost to eventual state champions Anne Nora and Abby Greenwood of Waterloo Columbus in the first round match.
The final score was 6-0, 6-0.
“They were thrown into the fire their first  match,” said Glenwood coach Jim Tucker of Rachel Tucker and Newman’s draw. “The first round match is basically a drawing of straws and they just happened to draw the state champs.
“And they’ve been playing together 10 years. They (Tucker and Newman) were overmatched.”
Tucker and Newman went on to drop their consolation match to Lindsey McGonegle and Lindsay McManus also of Waterloo Columbus. McGonegle and McManus lost to Nora and Greenwood in the championship match. Waterloo Columbus also went on to win the team title the following day.
“They are the tennis program you want to be,” Coach Tucker said.
Both Rachel Tucker and Newman are juniors and will return next year.
“They got a good experience and that will benefit them next year,” said Coach Tucker.
