Mills County Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

Funeral services have been set for U.S. Army Sgt. James Skalberg of Emerson, who was killed June 27 in Afghanistan.

    The service will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Red Oak with burial to follow in the Emerson Cemetery.
    Visitation will be at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Friday from 4 - 8 p.m.
    Skalberg died when the military vehicle he was driving detonated an improvised explosive device. First Lt. Stephen Prasnicki, 24, of Virginia, was also killed in the explosion.
   Skalberg was a canon crew member in a field artillery regiment.
  A 2005 graduate of Nishna Valley High School, Skalberg is survived by his wife, Jessica, their 11-month-old son, Carter, his parents, James and Kelli Skalberg of Alabama, and grandparents, Bonnie and John Stephens and Karen Brewer of Emerson.
    In lieu of flowers, Skalberg’s family is suggesting memorials be made to the Carter Skalberg Educational Fund. Sellegren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in Red Oak is in charge of arrangements.
